Hidden lies, rising to full value
They said that I was meant to walk down the road of life alone
They told me that I didn’t deserve to live
Repetitively- I’ started to believe it myself
But then you showed up, and gave me a reason to live
To live again…
Even if you kept it to yourself
I’m happy that you were there for me.
For I’m starting to believe again…
-
“You didn’t make this.”
Miriallia drew out the conclusion as she poked the fried shrimps in front of her, neatly piled on a layer of rice in the container.
“Why dear Miriallia, what made you think that?”
“It’s quite obvious.” The patient replied as she plopped one fried shrimp into her mouth and chew it. “Just the other day, your lunch was indigestible and today, it’s surprisingly not burnt- don’t tell me you learned to work miracles.”
“You don’t seem to have too much faith in me nowadays.” Cagalli pouted. “But believe it or not, I actually cook all of it.”
“Then it’s a fluke.” Miriallia stated. “…unless you had secretly poisoned it.”
Cagalli gave her a strange look and Miriallia laughed. “You know that I know you wouldn’t do that. But… tell me, what did you do to acquire such a skill?”
Being childish, she stuck her tongue out, “It’s a secret.”
“If I didn’t know any better, I would’ve thought your husband taught you that…” Miriallia teased, only to stop at the sight of the girl in front of her. “Don’t tell me…”
Cagalli turned away, ignoring Miriallia’s eye contact. Miriallia “…I offered to cook dinner but then it became a mess, so he taught me how to cook.” She muttered defensively.
“I swear nothing happened between-“
Miriallia smiled. “It looks like you guys associating with each other well.”
“Err…somewhat…” It seemed like a content answer to Cagalli as she eyed Miriallia, who smiled in return.
“It’s okay Cagalli. I can no longer hate coordinators… I might even volunteer to work here.”
The statement shocked Cagalli. “What?”
A solemn smile, “For all the months… years I’ve spent my time hating coordinators without trying to understand. Now that I do understand, I want to redeem it for my help to them in return.”
“You know that you’re not going to be accepted right away right?” Cagalli’s soft voice interrupted.
“Of course,” she took a deep breath before saying, “That’s why I want to change my aspects on them… and their aspects on me. Whether if I will be hated, I promise that I will make them see that not all ‘naturals’ are bad.”
Her eyes suddenly widened and she realized… Miriallia had matured ever since she had been here.
Cagalli’s frown dropped, only to be replaced with a smile. Suddenly, Miriallia saw this rare full smile she had never seen before. Even different from that time when Cagalli had realized that they somewhat had gained freedom. “
You go and do that Mir. Because in return of your efforts, I’m going to make them recognize us for whom we are. I don’t want to play into my father’s hands anymore. One day, I will definitely bring freedom and peace to both Orb and ZAFT.”
Cagalli wore a smile as determination eyes stared out at the vast blue sky.
It was a promise that she would accomplished.
But it was also a promise that would cost her… her life.
-
His eyes widened at the man in front of him. For once, Athrun Zala was speechless.
Athrun turned to look at the Yzak, who in turned shrugged, eyes telling him that he had no idea what was going on.
Nodding his head, he smirked at the man as his rich voice echoed in the room, “You do expect that although you’re my brother-“
“Step-brother.” Shinn interrupted.
“-that I would no give any exceptions to you, right?”
He knew his voice was cold and harsh, but it was the only way. Athrun knew that his brother would never forgive for all the things that his father could’ve done.
If Athrun had a choice, he would rather be Shinn - not be acknowledged for the things he did.
He envied his brother, but he knew that Shinn would never be able to understand his freedom. If he had a choice, he would hand over all that he had to him… but life had its own ways of dealing with things.
“Actually, I’d be really happy if we didn’t know each other, so this way is fine, Chairman Zala.” Shinn drawled out the last words.
“Good, so you will be working under Commander Yzak Joule from now on. He will be in charge of you and you will accompany him with his work. Your work will start next week. You may go.”
Without looking up at Athrun, Shinn strolled out of the door, leaving Yzak and Athrun.
“Sorry Yzak,”
The other commander eyes the closed door, and then sighed, “If he wasn’t your brother, you wouldn’t have left him join, would you?”
Athrun gave him a questioning look, “What do you mean?”
“Don’t play innocent, Zala. You’re quite aware of what I’m talking about. Shinn lacks the ability of a military soldier. If he was another person, you would have kicked him out already,”
“…No I wouldn’t.”
“Yes you would.”
“No-“
“It’s obvious, Athrun. Shinn is still young and naïve. And it’s obvious that he’s plotting your downfall.” Yzak stated with a smirk.
Athrun gave a smile. It was a smile of a sadist. “He won’t be able to. If he hates and detests me that much, then he would need to rise or have another politician to pull me down. But he’s already detached, with no connections. Even Yula would have better chances than him.”
Yzak gave him an odd look, “I knew you had an evil side to you, but I didn’t think you were that evil, Athrun.”
“It’s Chairman Zala to you, Commander Joules” he smirked.
Yzak grinned and saluted the man. As he left, Athrun sighed and spin the chair to look out the window.
“It’s better if you didn’t go down this path, Shinn. That’s why Father and I kept it a secret from you for the many years…”
-
“I didn’t think you would be here today,” Kira smiled as he opened the door for Cagalli.
“Are you sure your gate thingy-system is working?” Cagalli frowned. “Because it took five minutes for you guys to answer.”
“It’s only five minutes you know. Sometimes we don’t answer until ten minutes later seeing how chaotic the kids can be. I can’t believe you actually waited. Usually the people just leave a message on the intercom and leave.”
She glared at him, “I probably would’ve if I knew that such button existed and if I didn’t have to walk so far. But… why do I have a feeling you actually put me on the wait.”
Kira gave her an innocent look, “I so did not. Plus I never knew it was you…”
She snorted, “yea… right.”
“You know you can’t win against me.” Kira stated. “So what brings you here?”
“Since… I’m so great at directions, would you mind accompanying me to a music shop? I’m trying to find a violin.” She stated with a smile.
Kira gave her an apologetic look. “Sorry, there are things that are still left undone for me, and Lacus would have my head if I don’t do them soon.”
She raised an eyebrow, “Lacus…? Somehow, that’s hard to believe.”
“…Well… not Lacus. I promised to take Shota out today again.” As if on cue, the small boy ran to the door.
“Brother Kira! Can we go now? Can we go-SISTER CAGARI!” He shouted as he noticed her standing there.
Cagalli chuckled and she picked him up. “So, Shota… how have you been? Did you have a fun birthday party?”
The young boy frowned, “Both Sister Kagari and Brother Athrun left…”
Ruffling his hair, Cagalli smiled, “Well, Zala promised to take you out the next week didn’t he?”
“How about Sister Kagari?” She was taken back by the question. “Ish Sister Kagari gonna bring Shota out to play?”
“I’m new here to Aprilius City, Shota. So I’m not really sure where to take you. In fact… right now I’m asking directions from Kira-so do you actually know where it is?”
“Actually, I have the address. Here, let me get paper and write it down.”
“Get me a glass of water please. I’m quite thirsty.”
“What am I? Your servant?” Kira glared with a smile as he left.
“So, where are Sister Kagari going?” Shota inquired cutely.
”I’m going to a music shop.” Cagalli answered with a smile. “I’m going to get a violin.”
The boy’s eyes widened, “You play the violin?” he asked.
“No, but I’m learning.”
“Brother Athrun plays the violintoo. He plays it really good. Back then, when he comes over, he brings lots of roses and plays the violin for Sister Lacus and us.”
“Really now?” Cagalli couldn’t imagine the famous Athrun Zala doing something like that, but then she couldn’t say she knew everything about him. Something turned in her heart… it couldn’t be jealous. No… it was more like… depression in a way. “Lacus is a sweet and lucky person isn’t she?”
Shota nodded, “But lately, Athrun never comes over anymore. He doesn’t bring roses or play the violin… or play with Shota anymore.”
“Zala has a lot of things to do, Shota, so don’t blame him.”
Shota sulked but only to cheer up when something came up into his mind, “Ne, ne, sister Kagari?”
“Hmm?”
“Will you play the violin for Shota? When Sister Kagari learns a new song?”
“What do you want to hear?”
“For Elise!”
“Isn’t that for the piano, Shota? And it’s Fur Elise.”
“Oh… how about… Ave Maria, then?”
“How do you know all these songs, Shota?”
“Brother Athrun told me.”
“Aah, okay, I’ll try and learn it to play it to you.”
She watched Shota jumped with glee. “-wait. Pwinky promise!”
A smile broke out on her face, “Pinky promise, oh and Shota?”
They turned to see Kira coming back with a piece of paper and a glass of water. “It’s near the park… near the convenience store when we first met.”
“Thanks,”
“By the way, Lacus expects you to come for dinner, okay?”
“I can’t… I have to make dinner tonight. Maybe next time okay?” Cagalli smiled apologetically.
“What a faithful wife you are, Cagalli. You must really like Athrun.”
Cagalli, who was taking a huge sip of water, spat it out and fought the urge to choke while Kira smirked.
“See? I always win.”
-
It was a dusty, old music shop with not a welcoming atmosphere. The place was packed with different instruments and looked more like a storage room than a shop. It was dimly lit and there were barely any customers hanging around - just two or three people that she didn’t bother to remember.
She stared up at the ceiling, only to realize that dozens of violins were hung there.
“SHANE! GET OUT THERE AND HELP THE CUSTOMERS WILL YOU?” a loud gruff voice yelled out at the back of the shop, frightening her.
A couple of seconds later, a man emerged from behind the curtains, muttering and cursing his father and then greeting her.
“How can I help you miss-“
“YOU!” They exclaimed in unison as Shane’s index pointed at her accusingly.
-
“I would’ve never believed that the leader of ‘The Bloods’ would be working here as son of a violin shop owner if I didn’t see it with my own eyes.” Cagalli mused out loud as she stood near the counter waiting for Shane to finish helping the next customer.
The man shot her a warning look. “And I wouldn’t have believed that the bride of Athrun Zala, who also happens to be the princess of Orb would happen to take in fifty punches for the sake of a coordinator if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes.” Shane glared at her.
She glared back at him, doubling the intensity. “Why is such a big deal if I’m the bride of Zala and the princess of orb?”
“You seriously don’t know?” he gave her an odd look. Seeing that the woman in front of him was confused as ever, he sighed.
“Because people have been wondering why the famous Athrun Zala had agreed to the whole arrangement to some natural princess that has never shown her face in the public and was rumored to be a spoiled brat. After all, Athrun Zala and Lacus Clyne were regarded as the best couple here in PLANT. People expected them to get marry, but then without any news about their relationship, it was suddenly announced that Zala was going to marry the princess of Orb.”
“Oh…” she trailed off. “-ne, do you think my existence was meant to hurt others?”
“What do you mean?” The coordinator questioned.
“I’ve always seemed to ruin things, you know. If I hadn’t existed, then there would probably still be a miracle to help them back together, maybe? And that would probably mean that Orb will still be able to keep its neutral state instead of getting into this agreement.”
“If you hadn’t existed, do you think that kid would’ve survived?” She gave him a questioning look. “You know, the kid you sacrificed fifty punches for. You actually do have the guts for a girl, you know.”
“Coming from the gang leader, I’ll take it as a compliment.” She smirked.
“So how can I help you, Mrs. Zala?” Shane asked.
“I want to buy the violin.”
He raised he eyebrows, “You know how much one costs right? And if you’re new here, I doubt you have enough money - and don’t expect me to lower the price just because we know each other!”
She laughed at him, “Jeez, you’re such a worrywart. Just because I’m used to being spoiled, that doesn’t mean I take advantage of another person. How much does one cost anyway? Because I have about three thousand dollars.”
“Well, I can’t help but be like that,” the man retorted. “And you said you have three hundred dollars? That would be enough-THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS!? Are you serious?”
She narrowed her eyes, “What?”
“That’s more than enough. How did you even that kind of sum?”
“Zala gave it to me,” she answered nonchalantly. “Something like monthly allowance.”
“He must really care for you doesn’t he?”
Cagalli snorted, “Him? Care for me? That would probably make history record.”
“What’s wrong with that?”
“In case if you didn’t know, we got into this situation because of the war. He hates naturals, and facts say that I’m a natural. Additionally, he’s still can’t get over Lacus yet and to him, I’m an eyesore. The reason he gave me money is probably because he thinks that I’m like any girl that will quietly obey if he can give me what I want. Well, I don’t really care, but then money adds to my bonus. After all, money is prime thing in the world.” She was ranting, and she knew she was, but she didn’t know how to stop. It was weird actually, since she hadn’t planned to do anything. In any natural cases, she would probably have given him a sarcastic comment, rather than giving him all these answers.
Shane smirked, “Jealous?”
“I am so not jealous!” the ember-eye princess rolled her eyes.
“I’m kidding,” he suddenly turned serious, “But you know, there should probably be a part of him that cares for you. I mean the last time where we met, it’s not a place where anyone just goes there, if you get what I mean. The average time of being found in that place is like ten hours, yet he came to you and save you. I’m betting he was following you.”
“The average was eight hours? So that means that I was found like a day later?”
“No… after the whole fifty rounds, he immediately showed up, running up to save you and Shinn.”
“Save me?” she repeated. “Zala told me that it was some guy named Yzak who saved me.”
“No… Yzak is Zala’s friend and also a Commander. And I’m pretty sure he was not the one who saved you. I’m not exactly blind you know.”
“So the one who saved me was…” she trailed off. Her eyes widening as the things registered in her mind.
“Your husband. Athrun Zala.”
“Yzak was the one that found you lying on the floor and since he recognized you, he brought you to the hospital. I simply took a day off to look over you since it is my duty to look over you. After all, I wouldn’t want to be taking the blame if anything happened to you.”
It all made sense now. His clothes from back then, Miriallia…
‘You’re such a bad liar, Zala.’ She thought and her lips curved into a smile.
