This was a lot to take in and digest, but I agree that this series is starting to become less appealing to me. In fact, I'm a bit like you as I wasn't interested in the orginal Ben 10 series either, only from Alien Force and beyond. The only difference is that even though I had liked the new series when they are older, I'd didn't bother to go back and give the original series a chance.
So now that I'm out of love of this series, my love for the new Young Justice series continue to grow and my interest in W.i.t.c.h. and Digimon Frontier still stays the same, although the one for W.i.t.c.h. comic is declining due to several recent badly written issues. :P If they keep this up, I might have to say good bye to it along with Ultimate Aliens.
The new series isn't written to appeal to us, and in a way, it's a good thing--appealing to a new audience. But I feel like it is shutting out the old audience. Power Rangers has this problem a lot.
Same thing with the W.I.T.C.H. comic issues these days. Speaking of W.I.T.C.H., I love the fact that the voice actress of Taranee from the animated W.I.T.C.H. series, Kali Troy (Kittie), is now the voice actress of the super-heroine Rocket in the new Young Justice series. Of course, Rocket was also created by none other than Dwayne McDuffie himself back in the early 90's. I thought it was kinda cool since a part of McDuffie's legacy still lives on in this new series that I love and that its voice actress did Taranee, too. :D
Yeah, UA's second season mostly sucked big-time. I'm STILL hurting over how they ruined Charmcaster. Perfectly good character development thrown down the drain......
I thought Charmcaster was done perfectly fine, as she's NOT evil anymore. Staff writer Geoff Thorne confirmed this ("Hope is not evil. Sorry. She's not. Hope is not good either. She's figuring out who she is. But she is definitely not evil.")
I'm watching this from the perspective of a semi-casual fan. I don't go to the messageboards, I don't delve into fan discussions, I don't go looking for the writers. So what is said by a writer outside the series itself, when it's not clear within the canon? Doesn't help.
Well, it's clear within the canon to me. Charmcaster isn't evil, nor is she good. She's a tragic, gray-shaded character...and IMHO, a better-portrayed one than Kevin, at that.
I love reading your endpoint analysis. The way you dissect what ticked and what didn't really expresses the things that I wanted to comment on more eloquently than I can. The funny thing is that I was introduced into the Ben 10 series watching both the original as well as the sequel (AF) back to back. I enjoyed the original, it made me want to plop on the couch and grab some popcorn and enjoy myself. But in all honesty, Alien Force finally got me invested. To be honest, I wasn't entirely sure what it was. Something about it made me not just sit down and enjoy while it was on, I started to think about it outside of when I was just watching it. I started to look through it, flesh out its themes, try to understand what made it so solidly created

I hate leaving a fandom like this. It's like a breakup, only this one was onscreen through the course of very painful and messy reviews.
It's July now, and I still can't articulate how I feel on all of this. How my favorite characters mostly all progressed into this mess. How the story just fell apart at the seams. And then the sense going around that the best thing to do is to scrap everything and go back to Ben 10 original in terms of style and substance.
I guess what I've been trying to get at is that I got into Alien Force because it was a series that appeared to be growing with its fandom and its star. It was slightly darker than the original and significantly more mature. It focused on friendship and family. It made Ben into a leader, while the first series focused on him as a hero. That was the first two seasons. After slipping in season three, Ultimate Alien got back on track by having Ben as THE hero--the one who everyone now was looking to to save the universe. All of the planet, all of the galaxy, all of the universe was

It's always hard leaving a fandom openly. I had to go through a sad one through Naruto and I don't know if I'll be back - if only to see it end maybe. Completely understandable. It's a miserable experience but if it's not working out anymore there's no point in staying just to get further annoyed
