Oh gee, what a surprise... one of "my" Senators wants more gun control laws because of what happened in Arizona. Let's see... Boxer wants laws for "preventing the sale of guns to criminals, to people with serious mental illness and people who may abuse a spouse or partner"...

Hmmm... well, it's already a violation of federal law for a felon to buy a gun. I don't know if the guy in Arizona had any felony convictions, but wasn't he a convicted criminal already? Unless Boxer wants to make people convicted of misdemeanors ineligible, too, we already have this kind of law on the books.

Mental illnesses... it's already a violation of federal law for a person with mental illnesses to own a gun. So, nothing to see here, moving on...

Abusive folks... while I dont know what this has to do with the current situation, it's already a violation of federal law for people convicted of misdemeanor spouse/partner abuse to own a firearm . This caused a lot of headaches for police and military folks when it took effect, as a lot of people have insignificant misdemeanor convictions, sometimes from decades prior. And, speaking from personal knowledge of what I know for a fact has happened to a couple of friends and associates of mine, it is all too easy to get charged and convicted of this kind of thing even if you've done nothing wrong. It's sometimes done by vindictive exes as a means of "revenge" as well... note that I'm not making excuses for actual abusers here... there are few things I despise more than someone who raises a hand against a loved one in anger; but this kind of thing does get abused.

Anyway, so basically Boxer wants new laws that will do what the laws we already have on the books, are supposed to do. I've an idea... why don't we just make sure the current laws we already have are enforced, eh? Maybe find out if this guy slipped through the cracks, then find the cracks and fix them? Unless I'm mistaken, he'd been adjudicated as a danger to himself and others (not a hundred percent sure on what type of crazy he was, but I believe he had been declared crazy), and he had a criminal history already...

Plus, it's already illegal to, you know, murder people and all. So how anyone can think that new laws would prevent this kind of thing is beyond me.

"But, without Evil Assault Pistols with Massive Magazines of Death, this kind of thing couldn't happen"

Yeah, it would have been so much better if he had been forced to use a six-shot .357 magnum when he shot Gifford. Let's see, a 9mm hole through-and-through, or her head exploded and brains splattered on the ground... well, I know what kind of injury *I'd* prefer to suffer, given the choice.

Or, even worse, he might have just simply driven through the crowd... a ton of steel with a V8 behind it is far more deadly than any firearm. Just ask the kids in Costa Mesa that Steven Abrams deliberately ran down with his Cadillac as they were out on the playground of their school... well, two died, so you can't ask them, but five more eventually recovered from their injuries. Or how about my own first personal brush with death? I can assure you that the thirty people Priscilla Ford deliberately ran down were seriously messed up. The seven who died were far more mangled than any mere gun could have done. I'll sure never forget it.

Hell, cars are so dangerous that you can ACCIDENTALLY mow down dozens of people... George Weller killed ten and injured SIXTY-THREE in Santa Monica just a few years ago when he drove through a crowded Farmers Market...

I wish murderous scum wouldn't do this kind of thing, but when they do, I always thank God that they didn't use a car, since it'd be so much worse...

I'm not even going to get started on all the idiots trying to find someone to blame when we already know exactly who is responsible. What, having the guy who pulled the trigger in custody isn't good enough? Now we have to advance political agendas by blaming people other than they guy who did it? This whole display has been disgusting.
