Me: Hi, I just wanted to confirm if you’ll be open at midnight for Starcraft II sales?
Best Buy drone: Yes we will.
Me: Cool... is there already a line forming or anything?
Best Buy drone: Yeah, people are lining up.
Me: hmmm... well, do we need to stand in line, or can I show up at like 12:15 or whatever, after the line has moved through, and still get one?
Best Buy drone: You have to wait in line.
Me: Really? Even if the line has already worked its way through?
Best Buy drone: Only people in line can buy one.
Me: huh... how weird... so, how long do I need to be in line for?
Best Buy drone: People are in line already.
Me: Well, yes, you mentioned that, but I have a life and I’m not interested in standing in line for four hours, so again, how long do I have to be in line? If I show up at midnight and get in line, I’ll still be able to buy one, right?
Best Buy drone: Many people are in line right now.
Me: ... well, good for them, but I’m actually not asking about how many people are in line right now, I’m trying to find out how long *I* need to be in line in order to buy one, since you said only people in line could. What if I sit in my car reading until there are only, say, five people still in line outside, then I go get on the end of the line, will that be satisfactory?
Best Buy drone: The people in line won’t let you get in before them.
Me: Uh... well, that’s good to know, it’s also completely irrelevant to my question. For the record, I don’t tolerate line cutting, either. Anyway, the answer to my question, is...?
Best Buy drone: What do you mean? People are in line right now, two have been there since noon!
Me: Well, I hope they get an achievement or something, but again, that is completely irrelevant. Again... if I can’t just walk in after the line has worked through, but before you close again, how long must I be in line?
Best Buy drone: We close after everyone buys one, no one knows what time that will be.
Me: ... is there someone else there I can talk to?
It went downhill after that. I still don’t know if you actually must be in line or not... the only reason I ask is because I’ve heard of midnight launches before where everyone in line gets like a number or coupon and the line is closed at a certain time, so folks who show up later than that are SOL... not 100% sure if I explained my question properly or not but I kinda think it wouldn’t have mattered one way or another.
