Title: Where You Stand
Characters: Linkara/Insano, Linkara/Marzgurl
Rating: R
Summary: It was maddening, but almost in a fun way.
Author's Notes: I started writing this when the prompt was first posted and only just finished it. Also doing away with anonymity, 'cause...it ate me. ...high school AUs are a guilty pleasure of mine, okay.

EDIT: Fixed some of the formatting shenanigans. Don't copy-paste from Notepad, kids, it ends in tears.

Linkara considered himself to be a fairly normal kid. A little on the geeky side, but nothing wrong with that. He read his comics and hung out with Marzgurl (who he wasn't dating - well maybe - but not really), and tended to keep to himself.

He was also totally and completely infatuated with his lab partner.

His very male lab partner.

Insano was a fitting name, if an odd one. The goggles were off-putting, but Linkara rarely met his eyes. It was his hands. There was something about his hands, the deft way they handled the chemicals, very firm and sure of themselves. There was an efficiency to his actions that transfixed Linkara entirely. And the scent - the sharp, acidic smell that drove most students to the other side of the hallway when he walked past - was almost intoxicating.

And it was utterly, completely maddening, given that Linkara liked boobs.

He kept his head down in class, let Insano take over like he wanted to anyway, scribbling frantic notes and trying to keep up with Insano's stream-of-consciousness rambling. There was a cadence to his voice that lulled Linkara into a sort of trance, and when the bell rang for the end of class he jumped like he'd been shot.

"What's the matter," Insano sniggered, "Loud noises scare the widdle hero?"

"Hero?" Linkara asked blankly, but Insano had already shuffled out the door.

Linkara woke that night to the smell of chemicals.

------------

Marzgurl snapped her fingers in front of Linkara's face, making him look up from his lunch tray in surprise.

"Welcome back," she said with a small smile. He matched it, apologetically.

"Sorry. I'm just...spacey."

"Thinking about somebody in particular?" Her smile was small but meaningful, and Linkara's ears reddened.

"Kind of." The smile widened and Linkara kicked himself mentally. Too late to backtrack now, not without giving everything away.

"Hey, do you want to meet up after school? I thought we could hit the bookstore..."

"I'd like that," Linkara said, smiling at her.

"Cool! We could - " She was cut off by the bell and they stood together, shoulders bumping as they headed out into the hall.

------------

Linkara looked up from his notes as the teacher started speaking, Insano obliviously continuing to work until the teacher cleared his throat again.

"It's science fair time," the teacher announced. "You will work with your assigned partners to complete a project by the end of this semester. Syllabuses are on my desk; one person from each group come get one."

Linkara collected a paper from the desk, returning to his desk to have it snatched from his hands. Insano scanned it quickly, muttering under his breath. He threw the paper aside when he was done, sending Linkara scrabbling to catch it before it landed.

"Just limit me in every possible way, why don't you," he muttered, going back to his work. "No animal testing...what do they expect me to test with, teddy bears?!"

Linkara was staring at the paper. Specifically, at the line specifying that students would have to work together outside of class to complete their projects.

That meant being alone with Insano. And his hands. And that smell.

"This is going to be a long semester," he muttered.

"What?"

"Nothing."

------------

Linkara and Marzgurl walked downtown, Marzgurl chatting happily while Linkara walked with his head down and his hands in pockets.

"Hey. Hat-boy." Marzgurl snapped in front of his face again, and he looked up in surprise. "Whatcha thinkin' 'bout?"

"Science fair," he admitted with a sigh. "I'm paired up with Insano."

She wrinkled her nose. "Sorry."

"No, it's fine, I'm used to working with him." He waved a dismissive hand.

"Then why the face?"

He looked up at her, at her quirked eyebrow, and shrugged. "It's just a lot of trouble, is all. Getting to each other's houses. And stuff."

"...oh. Okay." She swung the bookstore door open, ushering Linkara in with a flourish.

------------

"So," Linkara said, sliding into his seat next to Insano. "How are we working this?"

"Working what?"

"The project. Where do we need to meet up?"

"Well, I can't ride the bus," Insano snapped. "I have a working lab at my house. We could go there."

"...wait, why can't you ride the bus? And how far is your house?"

"They said I was carrying explosives."

"...were you?"

"No! Well, I was carrying the components for explosives. I don't always remember to clean my coat pockets out."

"...huh. Well, I mean, if we have to go to your house, that's fine."

"Alright then."

"So....is today fine?"

"Whatever. Have you been writing this stuff down?"

"What? Oh!"

------------

Insano had said he had a lab. Linkara had expected a lab. He hadn't expected a sprawling expanse of a research center.

"Holy crap."

"Like it?" Insano grinned triumphantly at Linkara. Linkara tried to ignore the way his heart squeezed. "I financed almost all of it myself."

"Almost?"

"Almost." Insano dropped his bag on a table, ducking into a back room briefly. "So. What did you want to experiment with?"

Linkara's brain stuttered. "What?"

Insano frowned. "For the project. What did you want to do for the project?"

"Oh! Of course. Uh." Linkara slid into a chair. "I mean. You're better at this stuff than I am..."

Insano grinned again, bright and briefly insane. "I was hoping you'd say that."

He pulled a drawer open, dry-ice fog erupting from it as he did, and carefully lifted a small glass container out of it. Setting it on the workbench, he motioned for Linkara to come closer, kneeling down to peer into the cylinder.

"...what is it?"

"It's a new life form!" Insano announced gleefully.

"Wait - you made an entirely new life form? Like, on your own?" Linkara straightened, frowning down at the other boy.

"Completely and totally." Insano stood as well, still grinning that manic grin. "Impressed yet?"

"Well...yeah," Linkara admitted. In honesty, it looked more like wet pink Play-Doh than a new anything, but he wasn't entirely sure where Insano's upper limit was. "You really wanna use something like that for a dinky science fair, though?"

"Where else am I going to use it?" Insano shrugged, bitterness entering his voice. "No one's going to believe I did something like this on my own. Worse, I might have to reveal my funding sources."

"I thought you said you financed this yourself."

Insano smiled again, more wicked this time than anything, and it sent a warm shock down Linkara's spine.

"I said almost."

------------

Insano pushes Linkara up against the wall, pinning his wrists and sliding a knee between his legs. His mouth settles against Linkara's neck, biting and licking and making Linkara's breath hitch. His hips move against Insano's knee and he feels him smirk, press closer, grind against him and he cries out, head falling back, and oh god there are his hands, his teeth, his body, warm and close and Linkara is writhing against him -

Linkara woke, gasping in the dark, an erection straining in his pajama pants and sweat beading on his forehead.

"Funk and Wagnall."

------------

"Soooooo?" Linkara gave Marzgurl an amused look, shoving things into his locker.

"So?"

"So how'd it go? With Insano? Did he probe you with anything?"

Linkara dropped his book.

"It - it went fine," he muttered as he stooped to pick it up. "I got the bus routes figured out and everything. ...no probes were involved."

"Is he as batshit crazy as everyone says he is?" Marzgurl watched him intently as he answered.

"If he was, would they have let him in the school?"

"Well, I mean, I know he got kicked off the bus." She shrugged. "I kind of figured he was restraining himself in public, and would go nuts all over you once he got you alone. ...did he?"

"No!" They headed towards class, Linkara shaking his head as Marzgurl continued.

"Did he threaten you with lasers?"

"Marzgurl..."

"Did he sic his robots on you? ...does he have robots?"

"Marz!"

"Okay, okay, fine. ...does he expect you to die?"

Linkara's groan could be heard all the way down the hallway.

------------

"Can you come over tonight?" Insano asked as Linkara sat down.

"Actually, no." Linkara stared intently at his paper. He could see Insano's fingers out of the corner of his eye, tapping impatiently on the desk.

"Why not? We have work to do! Well, I have work to do, you have notes to take."

"I kind of have. Uh. A date?"

The tapping stopped. "Oh. Well. ...with Marzgurl?"

Linkara looked up then, frowning. "How did you - "

Insano rolled his eyes. "Please, she's only like the only girl you ever talk to. You make the same googly eyes at her that my brother does at his hump buddy."

"I don't make - she's not my - " Linkara fell into a frustrated silence while Insano smiled knowingly.

"Saturday, then. We'll have the whole day to ourselves."

"Y-yeah." Linkara's eyes went back to his paper. "Great."

------------

Linkara's eyes kept drifting over the top of his comic, much more interested in the way Marzgurl was sprawled out on the grass. Her book was propped up against her backpack, her feet tapping idly behind her, and she was still chewing on the straw from the drink she'd discarded long ago. Her fingers flicked out to turn the page and Linkara watched them, eyes following their movement.

Long, thin fingers sliding down his hips, over the front of his jeans, teasing along his hardness, a smile pressed against his neck, his own mouth dropped open in a silent gasp -

His fingers clenched around the paper and he forced his eyes back down, trying to care about the words in front of him. But his mind refused, his thoughts shifting again and again to warmth and pressure, hands and lips and finally he set his comic aside, sliding down to lay beside Marzgurl.

"Hey."

"Hm?" He plucked the straw from her mouth, silencing her protest with his lips as he kissed her. She rolled onto her side almost out of instinct and he followed, resting his hand on her hip as he flicked his tongue out against her mouth. Her lips parted and he deepened the kiss, sliding his hand up to pull her closer, fingers tangling in her hair. He felt her own hand, almost hesitant, easing under his jacket to rest against his stomach, the warmth radiating through his shirt and into his skin.

He pressed closer against her, his knee sliding between her legs, and she broke the kiss with a harsh whisper.

"Linkara."

"Mm?" His eyes were closed, his forehead pressed against hers, his fingers still pressing against the back of her head.

"Public park."

"...oh." He pulled back slightly - Marzgurl's eyes were hooded, her cheeks flushed, her lips red and almost bruised. "...I really want to kiss you again."

"I really want you to kiss me again."

So he did.

------------

Hands sliding up his chest, gasps filling the air, louder and louder as his body moves in a slow rhythm. Stifled moans as he bites down into soft skin, fingernails digging into his shoulders as he kisses his way up. Shoulder, neck, ear, his nose bumping against something as he traces his lips across. He pulls back, curious, and sees insane spirals as the body beneath him arches and shudders.

Linkara woke with a stifled shout, slamming his fists against the mattress in frustration. "No!" he all but growled. "That's not how it works! I like girls. I like Marzgurl. This isn't fair."

He was still muttering mutinously when he realized he was palming himself through the sheets. With an exasperated sigh he fell back against the pillows, throwing his arm over his eyes and decided to forcibly reverse the effect. His mind drifted as his hand moved, imagining blue hair under his hand, trailing against his thighs as Marzgurl's lips slid against him, her nose pressed to his skin.

(He felt a brief flicker of shame, though it was immediately overshadowed by the need to drive Insano from his mind entirely. If it took a little shameless fantasizing to do it, he was willing to be that pervert.)

Warmth pooled in his belly as he went on, his hand twisting against his skin as he imagined Marzgurl's tongue, sliding up the underside of his cock, her breath warm against his skin as she teased him. She wrapped her lips around him once more and slid down, down, hollowing her cheeks as she pulled back, and Linkara saw short black hair and saw a wide, taunting smile just before everything went white.

"...goddammit."

------------

If he was being honest, Saturday was not going as badly as Linkara had feared. It was mostly the same routine as school, Insano going a mile a minute and Linkara writing down what he could catch. Insano would fill in the holes later.

Linkara's pencil skidded across the paper. He squeezed his eyes shut, willing himself to be, just for right now, something other than a hormone-riddled teenage boy. Insano noticed his pause and stopped as well, arching an eyebrow.

"Having trouble?"

Linkara's eyes shot open and he glanced up at Insano, only able to hold his gaze for a moment before dropping his eyes back to the paper. "I'm fine."

"You look distracted."

"I didn't sleep much last night."

"Oh really." Linkara risked a glance back up and found Insano grinning wildly. "Date went well, I take it."

"Wha - not like that," Linkara protested, fiddling with his pencil. "Just...restless."

"Well, I'll make sure and tire you out, then." Linkara squeezed his eyes shut again. "...what?"

"Nothing. Just...keep going."

------------

"Hello?"

"Hi."

Linkara smiled into the phone at the sound of Marzgurl's voice. "Hey."

"Whatcha doin'?"

"Homework," he sighed, glaring at the stack of papers. "You?"

"Avoiding homework by talking to you."

"A cunning tactic."

"I know." There was a pause. "So, you wanna meet up in the park Monday?"

"I can't," Linkara sighed. "Science projects are due Wednesday. I have to be at Insano's until stupid o'clock."

"Oh." He was pretty sure he could hear her pouting. "After that?"

"I'm all yours."

"Oh you bet you are." He grinned, leaning back in his chair.

"So what are you wearing?"

"Shut up."

------------

"Linkara!" Insano yelled across the lab for what had to be the ninth time. "What does this say?"

Linkara started across the room, only to have Insano wave him off. "Never mind, I got it. Why can't you write legibly?"

"Why can't you speak English?" Linkara shot back, turning on his heel to stomp back to the triboard. "Type faster, I want to get home before tomorrow. ...oh wait, too late."

"Oh, quit bitching, you can sleep when I've successfully carried you through this class."

"...I'm sorry, what?" Linkara turned around again, glaring at the completely oblivious Insano.

"You think you'd actually have made it this far if I hadn't basically spoon-fed you the notes? I don't need to reiterate everything out loud, you know. I was doing it for your benefit."

"...what?"

Insano gave an exasperated sigh. "I helped you, idiot. Though I'm starting to think it was a lost cause."

"...why?"

"Because you seem completely unable to grasp the simple concept that - "

"No, shut up, not that. Why did you help me?"

The light was dim in that corner of the lab, and Linkara was a good ten feet away, but there was almost definitely a blush across Insano's cheeks now. "I didn't want you to have to drop the class."

Linkara decided to set this information aside and let it thoroughly break his mind later. "And you assumed I wouldn't be able to keep up on my own?"

"That class has broken bigger idiots than you."

"Okay, I'm going to pretend that was a compliment." Linkara approached Insano, spinning the chair around to face him. "The question remains - why?"

He was almost trembling, being this close to Insano. His fingers were clenched tight around the chair to stop them shaking. He could feel the warmth of his body, he was right there, staring up at him with an almost fearful expression, and Linkara had already kissed him in his mind before Insano twisted his fingers in his jacket and yanked him down to kiss him roughly on the mouth.

Linkara let himself be shoved backwards, Insano pinning him to the floor, forcing his tongue past his lips and kissing him hungrily. Linkara reciprocated almost without realizing what he was doing, lost in the scent and the feel of him, so much more intense than he had imagined. It wasn't until Insano pushed their hips together that he even realized how hard he was. His breath caught as Insano pressed against him, sliding against his hip, moving to press his lips against Linkara's neck. He slid his hands under Insano's labcoat, grabbing his ass and using it to pull them closer together, and the moan that escaped Insano made his hips jerk upwards.

"Touch me," he found himself whispering, even as he ground against Insano. "Please."

Insano sat upright immediately, fumbling at the button of Linkara's jeans, yanking the zipper down and sliding his hand inside. Linkara, already halfway into Insano's jeans himself, moaned outright at the feel of Insano's hand, the way his fingers wrapped around him, the slide of skin on skin. He managed to pull Insano out of his boxers, dragging his fingers up the underside of his cock, watching the way his face twisted in response.

Insano thrusted into Linkara's hand as he moved his own in rhythm, building a frantic pace that had them both moaning and gasping in moments. Linkara's hips bucked and he managed to gasp out what he intended to be a warning but was mostly a wordless moan as he came, spilling over Insano's fist and onto his shirt. Insano was only moments behind, hips jerking and stuttering as he bit down hard on his lip.

They stayed that way for a moment, chests heaving, staring at each other. Insano's cheeks were red and his lip had toothmarks it. Linkara had the almost irresistable urge to run his tongue across them, but Insano looked away before he could summon the energy.

"That's why," he mumbled, the words almost inaudible over Linkara's blood rushing in his ears. Insano stood abruptly, yanking his clothes straight. "Bathroom's in the back," he said in that same low tone. "I'll finish the triboard."

He disappeared into a small side room, leaving Linkara to catch his breath and eventually get up to clean himself off and call a cab.

It was a long ride home, and Linkara spent the entire time staring out the window, absorbed in his thoughts.

------------

"Marzgurl!" He jogged up to her in the hallway, wincing at the way her face lit up when she saw him.

"Hey!"

"Hi. Look, I'm late for class, but I need to talk to you after school."

She frowned up at him. "Okay, sure. The park sound good?"

"The park is great. See you then?"

"Yeah."

"Thanks." He kissed her quickly on the forehead, dashing down the hallway. Marzgurl watched him go, her frown only deepening.

------------

"...so that's where things stand." Linkara didn't look at her. He couldn't. He had just spent the better part of a half hour explaining the last few weeks to her - the way his mind seemed to swap between her and Insano, the dreams (though not in much detail), and the way everything had come to a head in Insano's lab. She very graciously did not giggle when he used that phrasing, instead smiling at him.

"You're a big dope, you know that?"

"I do now, thanks for informing me."

She threw a handful of grass at him. "Look, if you need to figure out where you stand - or lay, as the case may be..." Linkara gave her a look and she giggled. "Sorry. I promise it's fine, okay? I'm not going to kill you in your sleep over it. Though I do question your taste."

"What?"

She arched an eyebrow at him. "Insano? Really?"

He groaned, flopping back into the grass. "I'll explain it as soon as I figure it out."

She settled next to him, kissing him lightly. "...that's still okay, right?"

"Yeah." He laid his arm around her waist and she settled her head against his shoulder, curling against him in the warm grass. "...thanks."

"I expect you to return the favor when I go through my college lesbian phase."

"....wait, what?"

------------

Insano was pretty sure who it was even before he opened the door. He really shouldn't have, given his hunch, but Linkara stormed into his lab regardless.

"What are you doing here?" he asked warily.

"Science," Linkara said, grinning slightly.

"The project's done," Insano protested. "We don't present 'till next week."

"Okay, I was too broad." Linkara grabbed Insano's lab coat, pulling him in for a searing kiss that left him clutching at Linkara's shoulders for support. "Experimenting," he corrected.

Insano hesitated, then grinned widely. "To the lab, then?"

"To the lab."
