It's Love, After All
Byou walked in to the meeting room this morning to find Rui sitting on the sofa with his nose buried in a magazine. He seemed so focused in whatever he was reading that he didn’t even notice Byou approaching him. A smile stretched upon Byou’s lips as a plan to surprise the bassist came across his mind. Since there wasn’t anyone else in the room except the two of them, he didn’t think Rui would mind a morning kiss-just a small one, that would be enough to start Byou’s day.
“Boo!” Byou smacked the top of Rui’s head gently, and as an immediate response, Rui gasped, nearly dropping the magazine to the floor.
The silver haired man lifted his face from the pages that he had been drowning himself in. At first he looked a little upset, which made Byou worried because the last thing he wanted was to have an irate-Rui in the morning. In fact, an irate-Rui at any time of the day was very much unfavorable. It didn’t happen often, but once it did, everyone and everything that were anywhere near him suffered the consequences. A chair, a fedora hat that unfortunately belonged to Byou, and pair of glasses were only some of the examples of the many things that Rui had managed to break in his rage.
Well. They didn’t name him a sadist for nothing.
But fortunately, despite Byou’s worries, a small smile appeared on Rui’s lips. “Good morning, Chawan,” he said.
Taking that as a sign that the situation was safe, Byou leaned in and pecked Rui’s lips softly. He could feel his heart throb warmly at the feel of the other’s lips on his. The aroma of coffee mixed with a slight trace of tobacco lingered in the air between them as Byou pulled back slowly. He saw a tint of pink blooming on Rui’s cheeks; he thought it was one of the cutest sights he had ever seen.
But unfortunately, that small smile and the blush on those cheeks vanished as soon as Byou withdrew. He couldn’t ignore the twinge in his senses that was telling him something was wrong.
His eyes were drawn toward the magazine on Rui’s lap, and the pages that were opened. He could see himself and the rest of the band on those pages, posing as they had been told by the photographer. He remembered that it was around two weeks ago that they went to that photoshoot; he hadn’t heard that the magazine had already been released. Rui must have stopped by the convenience store to buy this magazine before he made his way to the office.
Byou sat down right next to Rui, leaning against him to take a closer look at the magazine. “Jin looks silly here,” he chuckled, pointing at one frame that showed all five of them together. He expected Rui to laugh along, but the man only hummed softly. When Byou looked to the side, he didn’t see any sign of Rui being amused by his attempt of a joke.
Frowning, Byou asked, “What’s the matter, Ruippe? Are you okay?”
Rui shook his head, putting a smile back to his face, but Byou could see that it was forced. Was it something he said? Or maybe Rui was really upset about Byou disturbing him earlier. Byou wished that Rui would just tell him what was wrong, so if it was Byou’s fault after all, he could quickly make things right.
“Nothing,” he said, looking down on to his lap.
“But you look so gloomy I could have guessed Maru-san had run off from your apartment,” Byou said.
Byou received a smack-a rather hard one-on his shoulder for his comment, which he thought he deserved. He knew better than anyone that Rui couldn’t take any kind of joke regarding Maru very lightly. But he wanted to know what was bothering Rui, and if it meant receiving one punch or two, then he was okay with it.
“Then tell me what’s wrong.”
Rui shrugged. “Nothing’s wrong, Byou-chan. It’s just that…” he paused, casting a flitting glance toward the magazine on his lap. “No, it’s stupid, really.”
“What is?” Byou pressed on. “It can’t be stupid if it makes you this moody.”
“I’m not moody!” Rui huffed; the tone of his voice made it ironic because it did sound moody, which went against his argument. “I was simply… contemplating for a moment.”
“About what?” Byou took the magazine from Rui. Was there anything offensive written in the interview? He couldn’t remember much of the questions, but he didn’t think there was anything out of the ordinary in what the interviewer asked them. He skimmed the pages, wondering which part of the text had made Rui upset.
Rui was silent for a few minutes. Byou looked up from the magazine to find him pouting his small lips, seeming as if he was considering what he should tell Byou.
“I was just staring at our photos,” he began slowly, doubtfully. “And I was thinking…” He pointed at one photo in particular-Byou’s single shot. “You’re really very pretty, Byou-chan.”
That was random, Byou thought, furrowing his brows. But it was a compliment nonetheless. “Well, thank you,” he said. “You’re really pretty too, Rui. But what’s that got to do with you being all miserable this morning?”
“Not miserable, really, I’m just…” Rui sighed. He seemed very reluctant to say what he was really thinking, which only made Byou even more curious. “You’re so handsome that you can go around without makeup on, without doing your hair, wear just about anything and still look amazing. You don’t have to try so hard to pose, either in photo sessions or PV shootings. You… you have a naturally lovable aura that it’s so easy for people to fall in love with you.”
“Including you?” Byou teased, grinning. He bumped his shoulder against Rui playfully.
His small effort didn’t go to waste, fortunately. Byou was happy to see that Rui was finally smiling-a sincere, if not a shy smile.
“You’re very conceited, though. That kind of makes you not very lovable sometimes,” Rui said good-naturedly. “But yes, I’m helplessly in love with you for all your qualities, the good ones and even the bad ones. However, that’s not what I’m trying to tell you, Chawan.”
“Then what is it?”
Sighing, the bassist he leaned his head on Byou’s shoulder. He slipped his hand between Byou’s arm and side, just the way he liked to, and clung comfortably. Byou would have loved to hug him, but decided against it because obviously Rui had more to say.
“Sometimes I wonder if you’re not supposed to be with me,” Rui spoke slowly. “Sometimes I think you should be with someone prettier, someone with a better personality than mine.” He sighed again. “During all our lives, all those girls screaming out your name… I mean, really, Byou-chan. You could have chosen anyone, anyone at all, to be your lover.”
That’s what this is all about? Byou thought. It seemed silly and completely out of the blue, but Byou knew better than to say that out loud. He wasn’t as cruel as making a fun out of his own lover when he was hurt and in need of a consolation.
He looked down onto his lap, to the pages that showed his own face along with his bandmates’. To be honest, he didn’t see why Rui should be so upset. In his own opinion, Rui was just as pretty, although it might be in a different sense. Byou thought Rui was utterly adorable-big eyes, cute lips, and fair skin. Byou loved watching his eyes and his lips when he spoke; they always seemed so animated and so full of vigor. And when Rui was smiling his heartfelt smile, it felt like the whole atmosphere lit up in an instant, as if his mood brought a little sunshine to his surroundings.
But all of those physical qualities were not the main reason why Byou was completely smitten to the bassist. It was Rui’s personality that had made him fall for him; it was Rui’s character that had changed him for the better. And if only the rest of the world knew how special Rui could make him feel, then they would also fall in love with him.
Byou closed the magazine and threw it aside. He was never really good in consoling people, not even his own lover, but what he intended to say should at least make Rui feel slightly better. He bumped his shoulder gently against Rui again, drawing the other man’s attention. When Rui lifted his face and looked at him, Byou spoke.
“What you said maybe true. I might be able to choose anyone at all to be my lover. I might even be able to date my fans, a different person every night. I can probably ask a movie star out for a date,” he paused, looking at Rui’s expression that was becoming even gloomier with every word he said.
“But I don’t,” he continued. “I don’t want to be with anyone else. Because, can’t you see? I’ve already made my choice.”
Byou smiled, touching Rui’s cheek with his fingers.
“You’re the best that I could ever wish for,” he finished, hoping that he had gotten his feelings through, and that he had managed to convince Rui that he didn’t have any reason to be anxious. And then, softly, he kissed Rui’s lips, lingering for a few seconds before he pulled back.
Rui was smiling-his genuine, heart-felt smile-the moment Byou looked at him.
“I didn’t know you could be so cheesy, Byou-chan…” he said, but his hold on Byou’s arm only became tighter.
“This won’t happen often, I promise you,” Byou laughed, embarrassed. He might have written many lyrics, even the cheesy ones, but he hardly ever talked that way in his daily conversations. He felt it was awkward, even in those private moments that he and Rui shared together. But today was an exception; today it seemed necessary for a small sweet-talking to put that smile back on Rui’s face.
They looked at each other; words that Byou could not say traveled through the air between them, with the hopes that they reached Rui and that Rui would understand. There’s a reason why Byou had chosen Rui of all people, and this reason went beyond the physical things that Rui had mentioned earlier.
It didn’t matter if Rui wasn’t perfect, because he wasn’t either. But together, they were more than perfect, and that’s all Byou ever needed.
Byou was about to kiss Rui again-their lips were only an inch apart-when the door banged open. Jin’s awkward face showed up, Kazuki, Manabu and their manager right behind him.
“Uh… it’s an absolutely bad timing, isn’t it? Should we like, go away and do our meeting elsewhere while you two… uh… continue whatever you were doing?” the drummer said. Kazuki laughed.
“Oh shut up, Jin-chan,” Rui shook his head, but Byou, sitting close-by, couldn’t have missed the blush adorning the bassist’s cheeks.
Byou smiled, ignoring his other bandmates and the manager as they filed into the room. He kissed Rui’s cheek and quickly ran off, giggling while Rui protested. What else can I do, Ruippe? It’s love, after all.
~ THE END ~
A/N: Theeere you go. LOL~ I'd like to apologize to the people who probably have been waiting for me to write GazettE fics. Not just GazettE, really, but fics in general. I've been busy and stressed out with a lot of things in real life. I'm planning to write a multichapter again, but nothing serious (in fact, it might be a total crack XDDD). Hopefully I'll manage to find the time (and enough inspiration) to write it down.
Thanks, and comments please ;D
