Life has a funny way of throwing ideas completely out the window and then dumping things in your lap that just scream "pure genius" at least as far as fic writing is concerned.
I have been stuck, for like ever on the fact that ultimately I didn't like Rido as a villian. He just wasn't evil enough. He wasn't enough of a driving force in a story that was ultimately more about Kaname and his past and his choice for the future than it was about a freaking blip in the family tree.
And then ch 43 came out. With the bats and the awesome pureblooded powers being thrown around it was hard not to be inspired to write something.
Originally, I had planned Rido to be the cause for Inara's awakening, because it's one of those things that she's supposed to deal with because it's her duty to administer justice in the pureblooded realm. Only, he never really struck me as something that would cause her to want to want to wake up. I mean the girl has been asleep for ten thousand years...it's got to be something more important than that.
Of course that's not to say that she hasn't been partially awake, ie she's been borrowing someone else's body to wander around. Ten thousand years is a long time and the world has changed a lot in that time. So, I was faced with a connundrum. What was the driving force that would bring her awake?
And then I read Kaname's hinting in 43 and it struck me. In the fic, it's always been said that Kaname out of all her kids is the closest to her, even though he never calls her by anything other than her name (even drops the honorifics). He pretty much states in 43 that he's fed up with the fact that the vampire world is the way it is and that one of the driving motivations for his current actions isn't so much Yuuki as it is the need to change that world (feels Lelouchian motives in this twist). I mean Yuuki as an excuse for everything he does only goes so far and ultimately would make a rather boring reason for his continued action.
So, you wonder just what it is that's going to happen in this little fic idea.
Inara, in case you haven't figured out, is my OC. She's a particularly interesting OC in regard to the fact that she's like the oldest pureblood out there and well... the easiest explanation is that she's "The vampire within the vampires within the vampires".
She's also Kaname's mom. You'll never, ever hear him call her that. Hell will freeze over before he calls her that. It's always "Inara".
He is one of twelve children. (I know, twelve....dear god how many kids did this woman have). And no, he's not the oldest. He's actually number eleven. Number one does eventually end up being his wife though, which is ironic. He marries an older woman...
Basically put, the vampire world at the time before his death was in the midst of an all out civil war, with three major factions that had any sort of power and a bunch of little ones fighting at the fringes.
Kaname, because he's such a nice guy and sees absolutely no point in Ex-human creation, has quite a following in amongst the noble class. They like to follow him because he treats them like people, instead of property. The other factions all headed by a pureblood did not.
You'll love this part....at least I do. The original Ichijou (ie the anscestor of the Ichijou line) was named Takuma (apparently Takuma's parents decided to name him after the first as a jab at Asatou's ideology) sided with Kaname, was his right hand man, most trusted general or whatever. Apparently he believed much like his descendant does, that the end does not justify the means. Even went as far as siding against his own father (who, believe me, is not a nice guy.) Should be noted that this particular Takuma is actually a pureblood...his wife however was not, hence the reason why it is that the Ichijou's are only nobles.
The Aidou anscestor, apparently, was also one of the group of Kaname's followers. Also, drove him crazy. He apparently did something kind to him once and there was a bit of a smile on Kaname's face and apparently he suffered from the same absolute loyatly thing that Hanabusa does.
Dito with the Kain ancestor being on Kaname's side. Apparently the Kain's have all been quite level-headed individuals.
Kaname's faction wasn't an active participant in the fight for power, he tended to stick to his own realm for the most part, just defending it. Ultimately what got him up and moving was the news of a certain little event. His eldest sister, Akiko (who becomes the first of the Hiou line) comes to him with a proposal for an alliance that could very likely serve as a point of stablilty from which they might be able to salvage some form of peace and informs him of said event.
Let's just say that this event was the source of the hunter linage...and who they ate is a tightly held secret because I don't want to reveal it and ruin the fun. But believe me who they ate determines the success of the whole acquiring hunter powers and ultimately explains why a certain individual has such simliar powers to Zero's (this also includes an interesting bit on the Bloody Rose, which in past generations wasn't actually a gun...^__^).
Unfortunately, to go any farther than this would spoil my storyline. Let's just say that you'll get to meet past Kaname, the Kaname in the future who's alot like Yuuki in that he doesn't remember anything (interesting story behind that bit), and you'll get to see lots of fighting and mystery and all things vampire. Including meeting the anscestors of the Kiriyuu, Cross, and Yagari families (much fun to be found in those three).
Ironically, I was planning for this story to be just the one and then I could go on and write other fics that had no relation. But lately, I've been getting into KanamexZero fiction and for some odd reason it sparked a completely unrelated pairing that is all sorts of fun and angst. So, it looks like there'll actually be two of them. How interrelated they'll be has yet to be determined.
I'm actually looking forward to this fic. Now all I have to do is finish developing my bad guy...whose name still sucks becuase I haven't settled on it yet. Started out with calling him Marcus, decided I didn't like that...too western. Then I thought maybe Shaun Yuu, but it just doesn't fit. Will have to pull out my kanji dictionary and develop a thoroughly fitting name.
In case you're wondering, Inara means "One soft wish" and it plays alot into her character.
Must remember to whip up a suitable Rido wallpaper. He deserves at least that much.
