Visiting the temple

Feb 09, 2008 23:42

Today, my family and I went to visit the temple. It so happens that in the year of the Rat, our entire family 犯太岁. Those born in the zodiac that happened to 犯太岁 are thought to not have a very smooth year ahead of them and therefore we, and many other people, went to the temple to improve our luck. (I'm trying to translate the chinese words into english but it is not coming out very well IMO somehow...)

The prayers went on for pretty long as there were many people in a session. My mum even felt unwell in the middle and I saw another woman feeling unwell who left from where she was kneeling to take a seat at the side. I gestured for my mum to sit at her place. My dad did that too. It was really tiring and I guess some of the older folks could not really take it. As for me, I was determined to maintain my kneeling stance till the end. I even told myself that the luck for my family would change for the better if I perservered till the end. So, I hung on and I managed to do it! It was hot and I was perspiring a lot. My knees were rather painful from kneeling in the same position for some time and my legs shivered during the prayers as they were tired and numb. But I was proud of myself for perservering till the end. I hope through this little sacrifice of mine, the luck of my family would improve!

However, if I were alone somewhere else in the world and my parents are not with me to tell me to do such things, I probably would not do it... Laments the dying traditions of my culture...
