Under The Stars

The Hyotei regulars had practiced late into the night. Everyone was so engrossed with their practice they didn’t even care if the orange rays of the setting sun were already threatening to dip into the darkness of night.

She waited for his practice to end. They had made a promise to go home together after his practice as both of them were staying late in school. Shishido was supposed to pick her up, but instead, she had to wait for him. Not that she minded; she enjoyed watching him play tennis.

“Did you wait long?” Shishido asked, running up to her, carrying his tennis bag.

She shook her head in response. “It doesn’t matter. I like watching you guys play tennis too!”

“Now who were you watching?” Shishido pretended to be jealous.

She was smart and immediately noticed he was faking it. “Who was I watching?” she pretended to think. “Perhaps it was Oshitari-san…maybe Hiyoshi…”

Shishido snorted. He too knew she was playing along with his game, but the thought that she was watching other players other than him made him a little jealous.

“All right! Are you hungry?” he asked her, quickly changing the topic.

“You bet!” She answered. “It’s already so late! It’s a good thing my friend gave me some sweets! Otherwise my gastric problem may act up again and I’ll hold you responsible!” she taunted.

“Let’s go then!” Shishido held onto her hand and led her away.

After dinner, the couple walked along the streets. Shishido was sending her home; he always did that when he could. Many girls were full of envy for her for having such a nice and caring boyfriend. What’s more, he was a Hyotei tennis regular.

They walked along in silence, enjoying the cool night breeze which gently grazed their skin. Her hair, which was getting longer, flew slightly. Shishido stared up at the sky. It was a clear and beautiful night. A half moon hung in the middle of the navy blue sky, giving out a solemn cream glow. It was accompanied by the twinkling stars which dabbled across the night sky. He let himself be absorbed in the beautiful view which came from above.

“It’s so beautiful…” she swooned as she joined Shishido in his activity as they walked along.

“Mmm…” he replied. After taking a last look at the sky, he shifted his glance to her.

It was strange. Shishido saw her many times, but there was a weird feeling in him. His heart was pounding slightly as he studied her; his eyes attracted to parts of the opposite gender he had never noticed before. Her eyes, as they fixed their gaze up in the sky, were twinkling like the stars. Light reflected slightly off her long lashes which were naturally curled at their ends. Whenever she blinked, it would seem that the stars had decided to reside in them. Every movement of her eye lashes would send his heart going faster.

Shishido’s gaze moved to her lips. He noticed that they were full and had a pink hue in them. They were parted slightly. He began to imagine what they would taste like…

Shishido quickly slapped himself mentally for thinking such things. He was glad it was dark; the blush that had grown on his cheeks could not be seen. His eyes stopped on her once again. Her face, framed with her hair which she kept long just for him, was illuminated by the moonlight. He was feeling an attraction for her and why wouldn’t he? That was why he asked her to be his girl in the first place.

Then Shishido realised something, she was beautiful. Although she didn’t like dressing up and putting skirts on, or enhancing her features with make-up and acted like a big tomboy all the time, she was beautiful. She was naturally beautiful. He was glad she wasn’t like the other girls. He loved her precisely because she was herself.

The couple had already reached her house. They stopped a distance from the gates and she turned back to him.

“I’ve reached. See you tomorrow!” she flashed him a smile.

“Yeah. See you tomorrow…” Shishido replied, his cheeks still feeling a bit hot. She turned away from him and started to walk towards the gates.

“Wait!” Shishido called out on the spur of the moment. He did not want to see her go.

“Ryou-kun?” she spun around again.

“Err…” Shishido was at a loss for words. He put a hand on his cap uneasily.

She looked at him strangely. “What’s the matter?” she asked but got no answer except an uneasy Shishido Ryou.

“If there’s nothing I’m going in.” she pouted slightly as she began to turn around.

“Wait!” Shishido called out as she ran towards her, catching her wrist and spinning her around to face him. When she was in front of him, he held on to both her wrists.

“Huh?” she was surprised. She looked up at him.

Shishido was unable to control himself anymore. Every movement of hers sent his heart throbbing uncontrollably. He looked at her with all the passion in his heart. It caused her to blush and look away. He brought his right hand up to her face and gently brushed her hair to the back. He slowly turned her face towards him and touched it gently as if he was afraid to hurt her. The night was beautiful, but she was even more beautiful.

She blushed at his contact, but it was evident he wouldn’t let go. Shishido leaned in towards her and placed his lips on hers. He kissed her gently. She was surprised at first but then she kissed him back. He deepened the kiss. She tasted sweet, so sweet that he thought he would be addicted. Her lips were warm and soft, and he didn’t know if he could pull himself away. She was his girl, his one and only.

They shared their first kiss, under the stars.
