“Shishido-san, are you all right?” Ohtori asked Shishido worriedly.

“Huh? Why did you ask that?” Shishido turned towards his doubles partner.

“Well…” Ohtori shrugged his strong, broad shoulders. “You just seem so out of it lately. Is there anything wrong? Would you like to tell me?” he asked concernedly.

Shishido opened his mouth, feeling that this was the best time to approach Ohtori with a problem he was currently facing. “Yes, the problem is her.”, he wanted to say. However as soon as he parted his lips, they clamped back down again.

“No…it’s nothing…” Shishido answered and continued with his practice. Then he spotted her walking along the corridors with a girl friend. He paused to stare at her and remembered his problem. Then he shook his head and continued with his practice. This did not escape Ohtori’s sensitive self. He, as her buddy, knew she had a problem too, and it was associated with this certain senior of his. He also knew exactly what the problem was between the both of them and that they were too proud to admit it. Things had somehow become very awkward between them, he noticed. Their “friendly” conversations had changed into stutters and even that of a few words. Uncomfortable silence hung between them most of the time. They were not their normal selves when they were around each other nowadays. Ohtori knew he had an obligation to solve what was going on between his buddies.

“Shishido-san.” Ohtori said one day. “Is it about her?”

Shishido, who was drinking from his sports bottle, choked on his water and began coughing.

“Shishido-san! Are you all right?” Ohtori asked with a concerned expression on his face.

“Cough! …Yeah…Cough!” Shishido’s face was all red from all his coughing. “What did you just say?”

“Those who are uninvolved see the picture clearer than those in it.” Ohtori said wisely. “Shishido-san, listen to your heart and not your brain this time.”

Shishido kept silent. Ohtori glanced at him for a moment before saying something else.

“She’s a girl Shishido-san. Remember that.”

Ohtori’s words kept repeating in Shishido’s mind.

“Listen to your heart, not your brain. Listen to your heart, not your brain.”

Shishido lay on his bed, his hands held behind his head, staring at the ceiling. “My heart, my brain… She’s a girl…”

Shishido closed his eyes and thought. “My heart… My heart?”

Shishido had never felt like this before. All he cared about was perfecting his tennis skills. Tennis made up a major part of his life and he had absolutely no time for other stuff. However now, a certain girl had crept silently into his life, and the point is, he allowed her to.

A radio station was on in the background. The sounds coming from the hi-fi system in Shishido’s big room drifted in and out of his ears. He did not pay any real attention it, but just let a few notes here and there enter into him. He concentrated on his question at the present. He was not making any progress however and a sweet melody stole the chance to infiltrate.

“Kimi no kotoba no hitotsu hitotsu wo (Because now I can embrace every word that you said)
Ima wa dakishimerareru kara kitto (I’m sure that we’ll come closer to each other.)
Futari de kasaneatte iku sore ga, ai deshou (I guess that’s love.)
Dare mo shiranai ashita ga matte iru to shite mo (Even if a tomorrow that nobody knows is waiting for us)
Daijoubu mou nakanai de (it’s all right, don’t cry anymore.)
Kimi to te to te wo tsunaide (We’ll join hands)
Aruiteku zutto (and keep on walking forever.)

Futo shita shunkan tsunoru kimochi ja naku (It isn’t something that builds up in an instant)
Sukoshizutsu sodatete iku mono da ne (but a feeling that grows a little at a time,)
Aisuru kimochi wa (the feeling called love.)

Kimi ga iru kara asu ga aru kara (Because I have you, because I have tomorrow)
Hitorikiri ja ikite yukenai kara (because I can’t live on all alone.)
Konna ni chikaku ni kanjiru sore ga, ai deshou (I feel you so close by me, I guess that’s love.)
Namida no kazu no itami wo kimi ha shitteru kara (Because you know how much pain tears can bring)
Sukitooru sono me no naka ni (I want to find a smile in your transparent eyes)
Tashika na imi wo sagashite egao mitsuketai (as I search for a definite meaning in them.)

The chirpy but deep voice of the DJ took over after the song ended.

“Now that was a great song by Shimokawa Mikuni! The title of the song is ‘Sore Ga, Ai Deshou’! And…”

Shishido was only half-listening to the DJ. But certain parts of his words as well as the lyrics of the song stuck in his head.

“Sore ga, ai deshou…” he thought, his eyes still closed.

“Ai deshou…” Shishido let out absent-mindedly. Suddenly, he shot his eyes wide open. Then he got up into a sitting position, his eyes still as big as saucers.

“How blind could I get, not noticing it?” he scolded himself. Shishido has finally found the answer to his problem, as well as why it was so difficult to figure out. His heart already knew it a long time ago. His brain however, refused to acknowledge the fact and continued to block the signals the heart was sending to it. Now that he had freed the passages, the answers came flooding to him.

“I was just…hiding it all this time…” Shishido said to himself. He slapped his forehead before staring up at the ceiling again.

“It’s because…I’m…I’m in love with her…”
