My thoughts on Into Darkness from a Trekkie

So my thoughts on Star Trek: Into Darkness. I have a lot of thoughts on this LUL. And yes I realize some of them are over the top but I like Star Trek a LOT ... It is my favorite fandom. Seriously. More than X-files, or Pokemon, or Harry Potter... and that is saying somthing ( Read more... )

I'm not a trekkie--I've only seen a few ToS episodes and one or two of the movies--so it's interesting to hear a die-hard fan review. Fair warning: I never saw The Wrath of Kahn, so it's highly possible that some of the references in this movie went over my head.

I had some issues with this movie too, but I'm okay with Spock being emotional. It would probably bother me if this was a TV series, but since it's a movie, I'm willing to make some allowances for character development happening "too quickly". After all, assuming the movies keep coming out at the same rate, the characters are only getting 2 hours of screen time every 4 years.

Kronos not having repercussions was one of the main things that bothered me. I admit that I don't know a whole lot about Klingons, but I was under the impression that entering Klingon territory unannounced was kind of a big deal, especially when a random human (who is associated with Kirk's crew, for all the Klingons know) shows up and starts firing on them. How did that not start a war?! I was also a bit surprised that the Enterprise getting seen on Nibiru didn't have any long-term consequences, though I'm more willing to give that one a pass.

My other main issue was Marcus's reasons for his actions. It seemed too out of character and too "convenient", I guess. Like "We need a corrupt Starfleet character as the villain. I know, let's make him an admiral because that would be so dramatic!" I agree with what you said. I have a hard time believing that someone that high in the Starfleet command line would go rogue, especially for such a dumb reason.

At least we really thought Spock was gone at the end of the movie… this one gave us like 10 seconds of uncertainty.
When Kirk died, my first reaction was "meh, he won't stay dead for long". I might have been worried if they had killed off anyone else, but there is no way they're killing Kirk for good in the second movie.

But yes, it was a fun movie! I probably won't see it again in theaters--movie ticket prices here are expensive, and seeing so many flashing lights on a huge screen gave me a headache--but I'll rent it on Redbox.

that seems to be the common feeling among the people i know that all the people who are not trekkies like the new spock and those who are find him to be poorly done. But I also agree the idea is that the char development is super accelerated. dosen't mean i have to agree with the way they did it.

The Klingon thing would tots be a HUGE deal. even when Kirk did things in the series to HELP the Klingons they hated him for it. What happend on their HOME planet would have called for nothing less than war in the name of Honor!! lul (i honestly don't like Klingons -___-; but there is a HUGE fanbase for them so it is what it is.)

The thing on the Nibiru was playd ok (but just ok imo) its honestly pretty common in the series for them to 'accidently' interfear with primitive cultures. Also when you think about it, in a generation or two it would just be myth and no one would belive it :P it may impact cultural development.... but heck... whos to say thats bad ;) (haha id be terrible at sticking to the Prime Directive.)

I 100% agree. Marcus was so contrived, and his daughers roll had so little impact that it kinda left me with a "why is she even in this movie?"

There were a few moments like that. Like why did Kahn even need to bribe that guy into blowing up that sercret facility? Based on his positoin and skills im sure he eaisly could have done it himself... just seemed like randomness to me. I guess a set up to show his blood could heal? Idk... seemed out of char to me.

:P and like you said. with as much as I can complain about the movie. I also liked it.

(ps sorry for lack of spell check ha! this browser at work sucks ass. )
