My thoughts on Into Darkness from a Trekkie

So my thoughts on Star Trek: Into Darkness. I have a lot of thoughts on this LUL. And yes I realize some of them are over the top but I like Star Trek a LOT ... It is my favorite fandom. Seriously. More than X-files, or Pokemon, or Harry Potter... and that is saying somthing ( Read more... )

I didn't know you were so heavily into Star Trek? Then again, we only just befriended each other recently on LJ. When I was younger I was a big ST:TNG fan.

As for the original series, my Mom showed me some of her favorite classic episodes and of course her favorite Star Trek movie, "The Wrath of Kahn." I vaguely remember seeing, "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" in theaters when I was little. I had to be about 5 or 6 when that movie came out!

Maybe, the problem is that the director isn't a Trekkie? At least that is what I heard? The fact the timeline was messed with in the first movie means anything can go, but like you said there are still events that took place before the disruption.

I have not seen the new movie yet, I rarely get to see movies in the theater anymore. Now, I did read about the speculation the villain would be Kahn.

I actually saw the first movie in the new series while on a cruise. I like Zachary Quinto, thanks to Heroes but I agree with you about his Spock being more emotional. Then again, with a messed up timeline, there could of been an event that made the original Spock less emotional that did not happen?! It is hard to say?

I don't talk about trek all that much esp since i dont collect it or anything i just really enjoy watching it.

I tihnk the director not being a Trekkie is exactly the problem. His vision for the 'world of trek' is clearly different than Roddenberrys. And understandably so.

I think they have taken a lot of un-necessary liberties with the time line, but again, it is what it is. The spock thing is harder to explain away IMO the thing with Nero shouldnt have had a significant impact on him. he was till raised on Vulcan and still taught all the Vulcan disaplines. I suppose like Kyogres said, they don't have a whole series to develop the char so its just very very accelerated... i just really dont like that particular aspect. Its like Data would be no fun if he wasnt a quirky android who didnt get why people did things... spock fills that same roll.

The later TNG movies like Nemisis and Inserection had the same issues though. the directors were not trek fans and it just makes them feel like fun movies that happen to have star trek chars in them vs. feeling like part of the star trek cannon.

I guess beggers cant be choosers. I wont pretend to not be excited about having more star trek. I just also wont pretend like they are perfect by any means.

Just because you don't collect it, doesn't make you any less of a fan. There are many things I like, I just can't afford to collect it all...;)

No one knows Roddenberry's vision better then himself. The man was way ahead of his time in many ways!

Another person on my f-list is bothered by Spock being "emotional" too. I agree with you, especially after you mentioned Data's development. Data was and still is my favorite ST:TNG character. Sadly, they only have so long to develop a character on screen.

I saw Nemesis on Encore and felt it was alright, but like you said it was lacking a certain feel. I've only seen bits and pieces of Insurrection...
