OOC rant

Apr 09, 2007 13:09

I spent what little fee time I had last weekend reading naruto fanfiction, especially that pertaining to Gaara, who I understand is a difficult character to write, and I was so upset with the mass amounts of OOC-ness (out of character for anyone who's confused) running rampant online.

This really isn't meant to be a flame. I think OOC can often be a fun and amazing thing, especially when killing time. Even the greatest of Gaara writers occasionally have their shortcommings, like things I can prove wrong by referencing the manga, but that doesn't matter because it's their universe, their plot device, and overall adds to the greatness of their works as a whole.

Most gaara writers put alot of thought into the way his mind works and how his experiences affect his actions, but this weekend I discovered authors who did the exact opposite. It was like they took the persona of a stressed out, hyper active, pre-teen fangirl and siphoned it into gaara's body. WTF - that's too wierd to even be qualified as Crack! Whoever wrote this, probably had a lot of fun writing it and is probably equally pleased to watch me squirm everytime I think about it.

I think the only thing worse than stessed out, hyper active, school girl gaara, is a gaara that has constant conversations with shukaku in his head. The demon will say stuff like "You know, kid, they call it a crush" and "you grow up so fast". I think that their personalities are so different that if gaara and shukaku had to share one mind they would drive each other crazy, er...crazier. The problem is, at this point, it takes me a while to stop reading because I'm a shukaku fan too.

Shukaku is very easy to write. It seems nearly impossible to write him OOC, unless of course you write the english dub, which tortures our ears with quotes like "I'm out, baby!" and "But I don't want to go back". For all the good they've done for the series, shukaku was their greatest failure.

Speaking of the naruto dub, here's some notes for those unfortunate enough to have not seen the original.

kankuro's puppet, "crow" is called "Karasu"
Kisame's sword "shark skin" is called "Samehada" and one of his most famous quotes is "My great sword Samehada doesn't slice, it shreds!"

the secret organization akatsuki translates to "red dawn" and the tsu sound is stressed more than in the dub. It's not ahkahtskey, its akaTSUki. Though the Japanese occasionally let the tsu fall in the back of their throat when pronouncing words like Sasuke (sahskay not sahsuuukay, akatsuki is not one of those words. If you listen to them say it in Japanese, you would know.

ok, I'm done ranting. Hopefully soon, I'll figure out the Lj cut thing and no one will have to put up with my large posts.

oh, and if your one of those authors I ranted about, more power to you. You wierded me out, but it's cool that you wrote it.
