Birthday bonus

Well, my birthday is next week and I settled on my birthday present to myself (um... besides the Tahiti cruise, that is). I bought myself the new Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition rulebooks. In preparation for this I scoured my garage for all my old gaming books and carted three egg crates worth of gaming rules and supplements to Half Price Books & Records where I promptly sold them for $50. Well, it was more like a half-hour. So I cleared an entire shelf in the garage and got me some spending cash ta boot.

I've been playing in the 3.x rule set for over a decade, I believe, and it looks like 4e is a rather fundamental shift towards programmatic consistency. Since the D&D rules first came out, computers and computer gaming were introduced and exploded in popularity. One of the shortfalls of the last system was its incompatibility with computer gaming. The rules were excepts on top of exceptions that everyone had learned to live with, but were very hard to encode. It will be interesting to see on Monday when the books arrive if this revision corrects that fundamental flaw.
