Jet Cyclones Match Report #4 (should be #5, but I was demoralized by the poor officiating of my nemesis Bob Trivett)

Jet Cyclones 2 - Orange Team 2

This weekend the Jet Cyclones pulled off a rather shock result, which in fact could have been more shocking. The "skeleton" team of this week was void of the presence of key players such as Julia "Left Out Midi" Hotopp, Pat "Intensity" Chesnut, Matt "Retro" Barriball, Sharif "Sharafee" Shawki, Sean "Grandma" Barriball, and Chris "Chris Boyer" Boyer. Prom really devastated the tactical genius of Bill Munyon who, I assume, had spent hours in line-up preparation. However, the 13 players who showed up all brought their A games and the match got off to a rather unlikely start. After an early decent shot on keeper Ian Bergland, a huge goal kick allowed me to break through the defense and chase on to the ball, only to be knocked down and fouled about 30 yards away from goal. I stepped up to take the kick and hit a low and powerful drive to the right hand side of the keeper who wasn't able to reach the nicely placed shot. 1-0 Cyclones. After the goal the other team bombarded us with an endless stream of shots, some going narrowly wide, others stopped nicely by our brick wall in goal. Then the Jet Cyclones had a turn of good luck. A backpass by an orange player to his goalie at the top of the box was called for an indirect free kick just inside of the arc. After a quick huddle with Anthony, our very own Germanian Heat, tapped the ball to me. I hit a screamer that was perfectly placed in the extreme right hand top corner. No exaggeration here, but the entire goal rocked backwards when the ball hit the net. After going 2-0 up against the league's best team, we were all in disbelief. However, this disbelief translated into a sense of team unity in our shock and in our most teamwork plentiful performance yet, we were able to hold off the onslaught of shots at our goal until the whistle blew for the half.

Half Time

The second half got off to a rough start. The orange team really intesified their efforts to forge a comeback. Not too long after the start a shot heading directly towards Sarah's face made her instinctually put her hands up. Unfortunately she was standing in the penalty box...P.K. orange team. Their player stepped up and shot to the right and I was able to dive in the direction and get a hand on it, but the shot was too well placed and forceful to prevent it from going in. We had a couple of chances after that to try and restore our two goal lead after some good work by Ian and Lindsey up front. We held them off so well until about 5 minutes from the end when, after some pinball action in our box, an orange player was able to chip the ball right over my head. Heartbreak for the Cyclones. 2-2. However, when all is said and done a weakend team of 13 matched a team of 22 good players. Great performance Cyclones...what what?
