This is my problem with the taxes: My dad makes around 250,000 a year in benefits, not in cash. 30% (around 90,000) goes to taxes. If Obama raises taxes on those who make 250 or more a year, my Dad is screwed. He has three kids in college, and college is expensive as hell. He had to take out loans for all of us to pay for tuition. Now, we are *not* rich. We aren't poor, but we are not rich. Yet we are considered 'upper middle class'. We don't even have dental insurance. And you know, my Dad works his *ass* off. He's got diabetes, and he has a very stressful job, and is hardly home, and if it comes to the point where he's getting taxed more than he already is, to pay for people's health care- people who he has *no* responsibility for whatsoever, that bothers me. It feels like stealing.
That's my only problem with the taxes. Though, Obama can't do anything right now, because the economy is not stable enough for his tax plan.
The thing is that the way the whole tax thing should work (and often will work, although not immediately) is that, yes, you pay more, but then you don't need to pay for e.g. a separate medical insurance, because you get that benefit already. Or suddenly the government funds (or partially funds) kids going to college, so you save money there etc
( ... )
The problem here is that Americans think Obama is going to pay their gas and rent. Not all of them of course, but many really don't understand what his plan is. In order for the system to work everyone would have to pay in, just as you said. But people here think (because it's been suggested and not well explained by Obama and his ppl) that only people earning 250 + will get the tax hikes.
I don't know why, but it just doesn't feel right having the government pay for this kind of stuff. It feels like they have too much power, and that is something our Forefathers were very nervous about when they made our Constitution.

Nearly a 100,000 a year for college for the 3 of us.
And remember- we don't see this money in cash. A lot of it goes to him traveling, because he does it for the company and other business expenses. Plus his healthcare plan, his pension etc. And I'm not supposed to know any of this lol. But I do.
I just don't like the idea of giving the government so much of my money. I don't believe the government should be taking that much of someones pay check. The furthest I'd ever go on the health care front is free health care for kids under 18, and free health care for elderly who don't have insurance. Everyone else should be able to fend for themselves.
It works in Denmark, but I really think too many would be opposed to it here, because for us, it feelings like the government has way too much power, which is not what our country was founded on, you know?

Ofcourse I can't really begin to comment on your family's private economy as I don't know enough about it at all, but $100,000 per person per year must be because a choice was made to choose an expensive college

His company pays for it- through his salary. The company is big, but not big enough to cover dental insurance. My Dad- doesn't have extravagant tastes- none of us do. And yeah, we actually do struggle finically- even though he does make a good salary
