I hunted down Mom's room number and phone and finally got a nurse to bring her a phone. I've upgraded her condition to "perky" 'cause she sounds surprisingly happy and awake for someone who just had surgery. She finally got some food, and that cheered her up immensely.
She admitted that she had been terrified of dying, and remembers snapping out of the anesthetic when someone called her name. She realized she was awake, and promptly touched her leg with her hand to see if she was still there. She said it felt great to know that she'd made it. Sadly, we couldn't be there during the wakeup part, but she says there were a lot of kind nurses who talked to her and reassured her that everything went well and that Dad and I were still out in the waiting room looking forward to seeing her.
I hope that the majority of what she's been so stressed out about was the fear of dying, and that the reasons for that are now past us. She's going to have a difficult psychological road ahead, but this part is definitely over.
