Ahh, my life is changing. First, got made redundent from new and wonderful job. For those non anglos out there it means that the compnay has deemed my job unnecessary or too expensive and are cutting costs by letting me go. Its a nicer way of saying you are fired. I was pissed and hurt and cried on the bus ride home. Dan of course was wonderful and held me while I ranted and cried and laughed. It was a quick drive through the stages of grief. We decided that day to finally find a bigger house outside of London and find a different life. We found a place relatively quickly. It has three bedrooms and three floors and is in a small VILLAGE north of London near Stevenage and Hitcham. Thats probably where I will end up working. I walked around Hitcham today with some CVs and then sat in a lovely churchyard near a stream and read my book and watched the people feed the ducks with their little children. Everyone turned and pointed when a black squirrel (now endangered here in the UK) ran across the green. Then everyone turned in horror at the sight of a goose attempted to mount a mallard. One woman eventually ran up to them and chased the goose away when her little one pointed at the pair and asked what they were doing. Priceless.
Other than that things are quiet. We are at Divas until Tues and tomorrow we do SAT. I so enjoy a room full of kids who can't follow simple instructions or write in cursive. We SO LOVE this dog though. Not only (this is disgusting) does she have her period but she chews everything to shit and snaps and howls and doesn't know a single command such as sit or get off me. Shes too big and at two years old, too untrained. Pet sitting has been a nice little income but now that we are moving out of the city I think that will be the end of us. If I get a job out in the sticks I can't travel to work. I guess all these families will finally have to start boarding their animals.
At least I finished my book. Tourin Shroud: How Leonardo da Vinci Fooled History. Apparently the shroud is actually the worlds first photograph and the head part (the head and the body are two different images) may be Leonardo himself. He used a camera obscura which is a very primituve lens and with an assortment of chemicals and the hot Italian sun he managed to imprint or burn a faint image on a piece of cloth. A lot of the book was very Da Vinci Code and confusing history of who possessed it when and how it was passed around and how certain Popes promoted it and other conspiracy stuff. I don't know if I really believe in any of it but it makes for a entralling read. The whole point of the book was to prove that this revered piece of cloth was not the shroud of Jesus (anyone crucifies with long hair seems to be Jesus). I really think that most of the relics are probably fake and attempts to take more money from the religious or the stupid. One point that I never considered was that at the time of Jesus there were two rival factions concerning who the Messiah was. Some believed it was John the Baptists and they called themselves Johannites. Leonardo was a member of this group and despised Jesus which is one of the reasons why he made this 'relic'. Another one is probably money and just experimenting with capturing images. Its a very compelling read if you can get past a lot of the boring details.
