High school AU where Harvey meets Mike.
Harvey noticed the dirty splodges on the boy’s shirt first, evident that he had missed his mouth while eating lunch and that food has splattered on his clothing. That should have been Harvey’s first warning, the first indication that getting involved with the kid would only end in disaster. The second warning was when the kid smiled at him and sat beside him during lunch, seemingly unable to comprehend that Harvey wanted to be left the fuck alone.
“Hey I’m Mike,” the kid said with a smile. He deposited a sandwich and a bottle of chocolate milk on the table in front of him before hastily unwrapping the sandwich and shoving half of it into his mouth. “What’s your name?” he muttered around the mouthful of food, spraying morsels of food everywhere while he chewed.
Harvey wasn’t sure how he had even managed to decipher what the kid was saying but figured that he was escaping the situation before his own shirt started to resemble Mike’s.
“I’m Harvey,” he said, before standing up and fleeing. Mike just watched him leave, a dopey look on his face and Harvey figured that would be the end of that. The school was massive and even if the kid was in his grade, which was doubtful considering how tiny he was, Harvey was positive that he could avoid him for the rest of the year. He got to his next class and took a seat just as the bell rang for the end of lunch and took out his history textbook, figuring he may as well get caught up on homework.
People started racing into class, getting comfortable and organised before turning to their friends and chatting. Harvey had perfected an air of perfect aloofness and his peers had learned to leave him alone by now. No one sat next to him in classes anymore and he preferred that. At least he did until Mike walked into the room, saw him and beamed before coming over and sitting next to him. The kid didn’t seem to understand the concept of personal space at all, seemingly unconcerned that Harvey was looking up from his book and glaring daggers at him.
“What are you doing, kid? Find another seat,” Harvey said, practically scowling. Was the boy special or just overly friendly? Either way, he needed to move. Now.
“My name’s Mike. I would find another seat but this one is free and all the others are taken. I’ll be real quiet, I promise.”
Harvey looked around the class and sighed; all the seats had filled up in the time they had been talking. He looked back at his book and tried to get into it but he could feel Mike’s eyes on him.
“What?” he growled.
“Nothing. It’s just… how did you find the homework this week? I’m starting to get behind but I haven’t really been doing much because that textbook is driving me insane because seriously, how boring can a book be and anyway, I looked over question 5 but…”
The teacher walked in and Mike immediately ceased babbling and started taking out his things. Harvey just stared at the kid, trying to figure out what his angle was and drawing blanks. Whatever Mike’s motive, Harvey figured that he had made a friend, in spite of himself. Or perhaps a stalker. It was going to be a strange school year.
