When no one was watching.
The only time he was close to her.
An unwritten rule. No one would judge. But it wasn't really allowed.
Oh, he was always close, always nearby. Always the shadow. But only when no one was watching would he ever make his presence felt.
The others took him for granted. Already, Saya could sense him at her side. She, too, just expected him to be there. Where else would he be? What was Haji without Saya?
He was the one who obeyed Saya. Haji was for Saya, because of Saya. He simply was.
But this Saya had others, not just Haji. So he was only close to her when no one was watching.
No one...
Including Saya.
A/N: This was written after a nearly year-long absence from the Blood+ fandom, after I had rewatched the series. The absolutely lovely scene that inspired this? Saya is stopped by Min as she's leaving the school, and just stands there, staring at her. David's calling to her, but she doesn't move until Haji comes up to her, says her name, and sort of escorts her off. Yeah, that's right, I'm in love with this image:

It's just wonderful in an understated, subtle way. :heart
I love to hear comments about my work, I like even more to simply know that at least *someone* has read it, but what I would like the most is for someone to tell me if I've made any mistakes.
