Catch Me
First Cut ~The Beginning~

Sometimes the very ways we shine in the eyes of the world are the very things that we use as fuel for our worst self.  This didn’t always mean you are a bad person.  Everyone has their dark and their light.  Everyone.  Everyone has some truths about themselves that they don’t even realize.  It takes the right person, the right kind of nudge, to get us to face who we really are.  It takes an even more striking person to make us want to change for the better.

Once such a special individual comes into your life, what do you do?  Do you change?  Do you pull them tightly to you?  Do you push them away?

And what do you do when someone else comes along to destroy everything you’ve built?

Sometimes there just are no easy answers.  This is a story of two people, struggling to find answers to questions they never before thought to ask.

This story began on the first day of the second term of university classes.  In the dorm closest to the campus gate, on the first floor of the left wing, two names were written beside a door where previously only one was listed.

Akanishi Jin.  He was attractive and charming.  All through high school and first term of university, he had seduced his way through the female students and women he met at the club.  He used whatever method worked.  He lied, making promises he didn’t intend to keep.  He sweet-talked.  He wasn’t above a little bit of alcohol, if that’s what it took to get the job done.  He didn’t feel anything for those girls.  Not a single one of them.  Sometimes he wondered if there was something wrong with him.  It wasn’t that he didn’t get aroused because he did.  The sex felt good.  But it felt hollow, like a passing diversion.  What he wanted more than anything was to melt into soft lips.  He wanted someone whose very touch was electric.

Kamenashi Kazuya.  A mystery.  Jin knew he was getting a roommate but he’d been out at a club last week with friends, celebrating the last few free days before the term started, when his roommate’s belongings were moved in.  Kamenashi himself was supposed to be there last night but had not shown.

To be honest, Jin wasn’t happy about having been saddled with a roommate.  Where was he supposed to take his women?  Hotel rooms could get expensive and he was on a monthly allowance.  If he had to rent rooms, that would cut his partying down seriously.  He couldn’t have that, right?

Stretching in bed, he was surprised when his arm hit a sleeping figure.  He’d completely forgotten she was there.  Jin wondered to himself if it was odd that even as he was contemplating his future ability to bring women home, he forgot he already had one and that upon finding her, he couldn’t remember her name for the life of him.

“Hey, what did you do that for, Nishi-chan?” the woman said, rubbing her head as she tried to sit up.

Jin raised an eyebrow.  Nishi-chan?  The hell…  “Don’t call me ‘Nishi-chan’.”

“But you were okay with it last night.”

“Yeah, well, last night I was drunk and now I’m not.  Go home.”

Disgruntled, the woman dressed and left.

That’s when Jin noticed the time.  Only fifteen minutes until his first class and if he remembered correctly, Yamaguchi-sensei was teaching it and she absolutely hated tardiness.  Why on earth were they making a music major take math classes anyway?  Stupid shit.  Completely stupid.

In record time he dressed.  He ran a brush through his hair and took off running towards the right building.  He got there, winded, with just minutes to spare.

Jin’s two best friends were sitting together talking already, waiting for class to start.  As he sat down, the typically serious Ueda Tatsuya shot him an odd look.  “Where were you?”

“Probably having sex with some hot chick,” Yamashita Tomoshisa replied with a grin before Jin could say anything.

Jin set his face to a mock pout.  “That’s completely unfair, Yamapi!  I don’t spend all my time having sex…” he said, but his twinkling eyes gave him away as he added, “…but I did have to kick one out of my bed when I woke up.”

“So that’s why you’re out of breath?  You ran all the way from the dorms at the last minute?  That’s all the way across campus,” Yamapi teased, laughing.

Tatsuya frowned.  “You’ve got a roommate now.  You have to stop this.”

Tatsuya’s reaction was nothing new to Jin so he just ignored it and turned to face the front.

Class was half over when there was a knock at the class door and then it slowly swung open.  Bowing to the professor and apologizing, a young man walked into class and asked, “I'm so sorry to interrupt but... I’m… lost.  Am I in the right place?”

The young man that entered was thin, with medium brown hair and long bangs which he kept tucking back behind his ears as the professor spoke, only to have them fall forward to frame his face again.  Flawless skin, perfect lips in a nervous smile, that adorable blush, innocent but deep brown eyes…

… wait, what?

While the boy bowed further apologies for intruding so abruptly after being so late to class, Jin shook his head to clear it.  This was another guy.  He shouldn’t be noticing those things, right?  But it had seemed like, for one brief instant, his heart had stopped beating altogether.  And though he tried to put the thoughts out of mind, he couldn’t stop staring at the slender young man.

Eventually Yamaguchi-sensei sent the latecomer to sit in an empty seat.  Jin watched with transfixed eyes as he walked to the seat right in next to him.  Why couldn’t he stop staring?  What the hell was wrong with him?  Those lips… those eyes…

Blinking, Jin shook his head to clear it and studiously stared at his notebook.  Hopefully, the latecomer wouldn’t be in his next class.  It was only the first day and already Jin remembered nothing the professor had said all class.  Perhaps he should have written something in his notebook instead of staring at the blank page the whole time.

As class ended, Jin sheepishly whispered to Tatsuya, “Hey, can I copy your notes?”

“You’ve had your notebook out this whole time and haven’t written ANYTHING?  Geez, Bakanishi…” Tatsuya rolled his eyes.  “Just this once though.  I’ll meet up with you guys for lunch, okay?  Use your free period to copy it and give it back then.  I gotta go to my next class.”  He handed over his notebook.

Jin started to pack up his things and that’s when he noticed the young man still there, standing near his seat.  “Um…  I wasn’t eavesdropping  on purpose but I heard… well, you have a free period?”

Jin’s mouth went dry and his heart started pounding as the man talked to him.  It wasn’t right.  Why was he responding like this?  Why was his chest about to burst?  The other boy had barely said anything and already Jin’s mind was racing.  “Oh, um, yeah."

“I don’t mean to intrude or anything, but could you show me the way to this?” the other man asked, point at his class schedule, which listed a building name and room number.  “This campus is a maze.”

Licking his lips to chase away the dryness that has mysteriously struck, Jin said, “Yeah, that building is kind of tucked away in a corner.”  And even though his head was screaming that this was a bad idea, the rest of Jin really liked the idea of spending more time with this person.  “My name is Akanishi Jin.”

The other’s eyes lit up and it was a beautiful sight.  “So you’re Akanishi-san.  What luck!”

Curious and a little wary of what the other might have heard about him, Jin repeated, “Luck?”

“I’m Kamenashi Kazuya - Kame for short.  I’m your roommate!”

And the only thing Jin could think was, “How the hell did I get into this mess?”

Well, that, and how kissably soft Kame’s lips looked...
