Chapter Twenty ~The DNA~

“So what can you tell me about the boy, Kamenashi?” Koki asked the doctor after Kame had been stabilized and moved to a room.

Even before she uttered a single word, Koki’s heart was breaking just from her expression.  Frankly, she looked like she was about to cry.

“Is… is it that bad?  Will he live?”

The woman said, “Yes, he’s…” but she seemed to be fishing for the appropriate word and eventually settled on, “…stable.”

“And?”

Taking a deep breath, the woman continued, “The man who brought him in said he’d been beaten and raped.  Kamenashi shows signs of long term physical and sexual abuse.  Some of those healed fractures are years old, his chest is covered in scars, and his back is just so much meat right now.  It’s… it’s the worst I’ve… I mean, and I’ve seen a lot over the years.”  Another pause.  “We ran the rape kit, semen present, so if you want to sign for that…  You know the procedure…”

Koki nodded, taking in what the woman was saying.  “Can I see him?”

“Yes.  Though, we had to sedate him.  When he woke up, he yanked his IV out and started screaming.”

Wait, what?  “I thought the boy couldn’t talk?”

“Well, he didn’t say much.  Just kept shouting ‘Jin’ over and over.  I’m not sure what it means, though.”

Kamenashi shouting for Jin…  The poor boy was probably terrified and in a lot of pain.  “Understood.  Take me to him?”

The doctor gestured for one of the nurses.  “Take him to Kamenashi’s room.”

“Oh, one last thing before you get back to work.”

She looked up at him.  “Yes?”

“Don’t let him leave and don’t let anyone else take him, no matter who they claim to be.  Not friends, not family.  He stays here.”

The doctor nodded and headed back towards the emergency room, while the nurse led Koki to Kamenashi’s room.

So that was what the boy looked like…  So far, Koki had only seen ten-year-old photos of him.  It would probably have been better for Jin if he’d never found the boy, but looking at Kamenashi after everything he’d heard from Jin and from the doctor, he was glad Jin had.  Jin probably was, too, or he’d never have brought him to the hospital; he had to know he’d get arrested.

It seemed at least luck was on Jin’s side for the time being, if you could ever start to call any of what happened to Kamenashi “luck” considering his current state.  It sounded like they’d managed to either catch Ryo in the act or right after, for Jin to have told the hospital Kame had been raped.  DNA should clear Jin in that case.  The lab was always pretty busy but he’d have them move this to the front of the queue.

He wanted Jin cleared before they had to move him to an actual prison.  Even other criminals don’t like child molesters and child murderers and Koki wasn’t sure Jin would be safe in prison once the other inmates found out what he was charged with.

As he turned to leave, Koki nearly walked into a man entering the room.

He started to apologize but then he recognized the man.

It was Yamashita Tomohisa, leader of Manatsu gang.

“What are you doing here?  Are you after the boy?” Koki demanded, eyes narrowing.

Hesitantly, Yamashita said, “You are… his friend?  Yes?  He is arrested?”

Koki nodded, wondering where the man was going with this line of conversation.  “I had to.  But, yes, he’s my friend.  Why are you here?”

“I told him he’d get arrested…” the man mumbled to himself.  Shaking his head, he spoke a little louder as he said, “This boy he… When Nishikido… I saw…  Akanishi loves him.  Real, pure, simple, absolute love.  I… know what that’s like.  Not many people do.  I also know… what it does to you when you lose it…”

“Yamashita-san?”

“Look, I don’t want to talk about it.  I’m just going to keep an eye on the boy, okay?  It’s not your business.”

Koki sighed but then something the gangster had said caught his attention.  “You saw Nishikido with the boy?”

“I saw Jin’s hand pinned to the arm of the couch with a knife or dagger of some kind.  I saw the boy shouting Jin’s name while Nishikido hit and kicked him.  I saw the boy’s eyes go dead when Nishikido started to rape him while Jin did his best to get the knife out of his hand.  But we interrupted everything and Nishikido escaped with the boy.  We tracked him back to his house but he managed to give us the slip again, killing one of my men in the process.  Jin found Kamenashi and brought him here.”

A deep breath and then Yamashita continued, “Look, I’m not testifying, okay?  But I guarantee, if you search that house, you won’t need me to.”

Angrily, Koki shot back, “The kidnapping wasn’t the only charge.  That kid you sent…”

“You mean the kid Nishikido sent?  I’m pretty sure you’ll find what you need at his house.”

But Jin had already told him the gang sent the kid.  If Koki brought whatever evidence Yamashita was hinting about in to the station, if he testified in court to having found it and what its significance was while knowing it was fake…

It wasn’t only wrong; it was illegal.

Then again, it might be enough to get Jin released and after they had Nishikido for the kidnapping, rape, and abuse of Kamenashi over the past ten years, it wouldn’t matter if the evidence linking him to the attack on Jin was debunked.

Yes, maybe that was the best way to go about this.  Bring in the evidence, get Jin released, and then miraculously find out the evidence was faked.  They’d still have more than enough actual evidence to get Nishikido for what he did to the boy and once their sights were set on his, Jin would be forgotten.

“For now, it will do.”

Yamashita gave him a small smile.  “Please don’t mention to anyone - least of all Jin - that I’m here, keeping watch over the boy.  I don’t want people thinking I’ve gone soft and Jin is too nosy to leave it be.”

Koki nodded, still a bit wary of the man.

“If I find out later this is all a trick…”

“I swear to you it isn’t.”

“You’d better hope so…”

Yamapi watched Jin’s cop friend leave and then he settled into the token uncomfortable chair that seemed to come standard with every hospital room in the entire universe.  Watching the boy sleep, he wondered what it was about Kamenashi that affected people the way he did.  Nishikido was completely obsessed with him.  Jin, who’d never expressed an interest in men in the first place, had fallen head-over-stupid-heels in love and they’d only known each other maybe three weeks.  The boy couldn’t even - well, make that wouldn’t - talk, for goodness sake!

Even Yamapi hadn’t been completely immune.  He had jumped the gun and shot Nakamaru in an attempt to save Jin and Kamenashi, hadn’t he?  Without a second thought, he’d invited Jin back into Manatsu and then put together a full-scale assault on Nishikido’s place.  True, it was partially due to the murder of Subaru but, even if he couldn’t admit it to anyone else, Yamapi just couldn’t leave Kamenashi to suffer like that.  In that moment when he looked into the other’s eyes and saw them go dead, the thought that someone could do that to him had infuriated Yamapi.

Despite everything the boy must have suffered through the past ten years, there was still some pure quality to him.  Some sort of innocence that radiated from somewhere within him even if every other bit of his body, mind, and soul had been tainted and torn.

Those dead eyes, though… had Nishikido finally managed to find that small but insistent corner of the boy after all those years?

It was a strange thought to have, but Yamapi was actually glad.  Not about the boy; that was tragic.  About his fiancée.

Kamenashi had endured ten years in the hands of that monster Nishikido.  That son of a bitch Yokoyama and his crew only had her for a weekend.

Still, Yamapi decided, sometimes there just aren’t enough bullets in the world.

Eventually the boy stirred.  He seemed pretty heavily sedated; he couldn’t really sit up though he kept trying to get out of bed, calling softly for Jin.  Yamapi wasn’t worried.  The boy was too drugged to get out of bed.  But when the boy went to pull his IV out, Yamapi interfered.

When he grabbed Kame’s wrist, the boy freaked out even more… at least, as much as the pain killers and not-quite-worn-off sedative would let him.  He kept crying out for Jin.

“He’ll come back, I promise.”

But the boy still wouldn’t settle.  He seemed completely terrified.

“Do you not know where you are?”

Fearfully, the boy shook his head.

“This is the hospital.  You need to leave that in your arm; it’s how they are giving you the pain medicine and probably fluids as well.”

It looked like Kamenashi was trying to say something but wasn’t having much success in getting the words out but finally managed to get out something that sounded somewhat like, “Jin?  Where?”

Should he tell the boy?  It might only make him more scared since there really wasn’t a way to know how long it would take for Jin to come back.

A few more unsuccessful attempts but then Kame was finally able to get the words out again, only a little louder.  “Jin?  Where?  Jin where?  Jin where?  Jinwherejinwherejinwhere…”  But the effort seemed to have exhausted him and he trailed off, eyes fluttering closed sleepily.  “Jin… whe… ji…”

“He’ll be back soon.  Go back to sleep, okay?  You’re hurt pretty bad.”

Eyes still closed, Kamenashi mumbled, “Ji… whe…” but eventually he stopped and Yamapi could tell the boy had fallen back asleep.

Back to the uncomfortable chair.

He just knew Nishikido would show up eventually and he wouldn’t put it past the man to try to take the boy from the hospital by force if he found him.

“DNA doesn’t match,” Koki said to the Assistant District Attorney.  “We have to let him go.”

“For the kidnapping, yes, but what about…” he responded.

Koki was ready for that.  “Over the course of my investigation, I’ve come to believe the man acted in self defense.  I got a tip earlier today that the man who has been claiming to be Kamenashi’s uncle is not, in fact, related to him at all and was the man who kidnapped him originally.  They also said he might have something to do with that incident as well.  All I need is a search warrant for his property.  Get that for me and I’ll have evidence for you.  But please, I really believe this man Akanishi is innocent.”

“Because he’s your friend?”

Hmm, he didn’t think anyone knew that.  “Which is, first of all, why I asked to be pulled off the case and, second of all, even if I believe he is innocent, I still arrested him because it’s my job.  I care about my job and I will do it.  Don’t ever question my sense of right and wrong or accuse me of behaving in any way unprofessionally, because I know what’s right and I know what my job is and I will continue to be guided by both.”

“If I get the search warrant, I can’t have you on the search.  Assuming you are correct, we don’t want our evidence tossed because you are the other suspect’s friend.  So, yeah, make sure your boss takes you off of the case and I’ll get a search warrant for your replacement.  Okay?”

“Perfect.”

And Koki meant it.

Jin supposed it was only a matter of time before they moved him from the station to the prison, but, truthfully, that wasn’t what he was worried about.  Not in the slightest, though he probably should have been.

No, it was Kame.  He… he didn’t know if…

But Koki would come tell him, if something happened to Kame, right?  If the doctors weren’t able to…

God, he couldn’t even think it.  If he thought it, that meant admitting it might be true.  And it just couldn’t be true, right?

Though… even if the doctors patched him up, would it do any good?  Every time Jin closed his eyes, he could hear himself shouting ‘I love you’ and he could see the fight leave Kame and his eyes just…

Was he even still in there somewhere?  Or had Nishikido finally destroyed him completely past repair?

Please, if he is still alive, don’t let that monster take him while I can’t be there to protect him.  Please…

Jin let out a ragged frustrated scream, earning him several strange looks and a shouted, “You be quiet back there, you hear?  Don’t make me come back there,” from some random cop.

Hours passed.  Nobody seemed in a great hurry to get him processed and on his way to the prison, but Jin was mostly grateful for that.  Though he did feel somewhat in limbo.

But then he spotted Koki on his way back.

“Detective Tanaka!” he shouted, waving.  “Tanaka-san!”

Koki gave him some sort of hand signal that Jin interpreted to mean ‘just a minute’ since immediately after, Koki disappeared into an office.  But eventually he did come back out and came to talk to Jin.

“You can drop the ‘Tanaka-san’ bit.  My boss knows now.”

“B-b-but… what about Kame?  If he knows we’re friends he won’t let you… someone needs to watch him!”  Jin practically exploded.  “Oh, god, is he okay?  Please tell me they were able to save him!  He has to be okay.  He has to!”  And Jin was rocking back and forth.

Koki gave him an odd look and murmured something that sounded suspiciously like, “So he was right…” but then the detective shook his head and said, “Kamenashi is alive.  He’s being watched and the doctor has been told not to release him into anyone’s custody and to not let him leave.”

“But… someone should be with him.  He’s probably so scared right now…  Please, you have to go back.  Stay with him!”

Koki swallowed hard and then said, “I left someone watching him.”

“Who?  Do you really trust them that much?”  Jin didn’t like the way Koki acted just then.

Clicking his tongue, Koki said, “Not in the slightest?”  He looked pretty much like a kid who’d just done something stupid and knew it.

“That’s supposed to be a question?  The hell, Koki!?”

“Look, someone you know is watching him.  That’s all I’ll tell you, okay?”  But after a pause, Koki continued with, “He did freak out.  They had to sedate him.  The doctor said he kept trying to leave.  He was… calling your name…”

Kame…

From Koki, “I finally got taken off the case.  Someone is being sent to search Nishikido’s house and if that goes the way I think it will, you’ll be out of here by the end of the day.  They already ran DNA from, you know, Kamenashi… and it didn’t match you, so…”

“Thank goodness.  I was worried.”

Koki straightened immediately and practically shouted, “What?!  Why the hell would you be worried about the damn DNA?  The hell?”

Blushing and sort of shrinking back into himself, Jin admitted, “A few days ago…”

“God, Jin, how could you do something like that?  He’s a kid, damn it!  You… idiot… stupid… Bakanishi… damn… idiot… asshole!”

Defensively, Jin responded, “He’s not a kid!  Not, um, legally.  He’s an adult.”

“Legally, yeah.  But really?  No, no he isn’t!  You took advantage of him anyway?  Oh, I’m going to be ill.  Jin, how could you?  After everything that boy has been through?”

Now Jin was angry, too.  “It wasn’t like that at all.  And stop acting like you know him because you don’t, okay?  Not like I do.  He wanted it and I wanted it.”

“That doesn’t make it right, Jin.  Not by a long shot.  God, all this time I’ve believed in you.  I’ve said to myself, Jin doesn’t do stuff like that.  But maybe I just don’t know you at all.  First I find out you’re in a gang for three years, lying about it, and now this?  This is just sick and wrong and I know you realized that!  God, I’m going to be ill…  Damn it, Jin!”

And Koki stormed off.

Jin had never seen him that angry.  He really did look physically ill at the thought of Jin having sex with Kame.

He hadn’t even been that angry when Jin, in his fury, had made threats on Nishikido’s life while on the phone with Koki after Ueda’s house burned down.

It hurt to watch him storm off.  The worst part?  There was still some tiny bit of him that couldn’t help but agree with Koki.

The rest of him, though?  The rest of him was just fine with it.  The rest of him remembered how completely right it felt the whole time it was happening; it wasn’t until after he and Kame had finished that the tiny little bit spoke up.  And even then, that bit found itself completely outnumbered.  It had most of him and all of Kame set against it.

Chapter Twenty One ~The Hospital~

A/N: Well, Koki is pretty disgusted with Jin now.  What do you guys think?  Jin right or Koki right?

Anyway, hope you enjoyed this chapter.

Oh, and I really have no clue how long it would take since having sex for them to not get a DNA hit as being from two sources instead of just Ryo.  SO... willing suspension of disbelief and just roll with it, okay?  I took a guess and we can all pretend the guess is right, even if it isn't... right?
