Snowflake Challenge, Day 5

Day 5

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I scrolled through my AO3 history (so helpful when I start thinking about "that one fic, with the thing, what was it called?") and decided to rec 3 fairly random things that aren't by writers I know, or whom I knew of, at the time I read the stories. Just things that made me happy, made me think, made me feel, in the order I read them this year:

Chance (170619 words) by SallyExactly
Chapters: 9/9
Fandom: The Avengers (2012), Marvel Cinematic Universe
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Relationships: Clint Barton & Natasha Romanov, Clint Barton & Phil Coulson, Phil Coulson & Natasha Romanov
Characters: Clint Barton, Natalia Romanova, Phil Coulson, Nick Fury, Sharon Carter
Series: Part 1 of At My Back
Summary:
Clint Barton's snap decision to re-interpret his mission orders means a new life for Natalia Romanova. She's only got the one shot at it, though, and "how to live and remake yourself in three easy steps" was never included in her assassin training.

The story is so long, and it's sooooo good. It's gen, and it's one of those stories that proves you don't need romance and sex to have feelings. SO. MANY. FEELINGS. I love this Clint and this Natasha and their friendship is aMAZing; more important, SallyExactlly gives it all the time and space it needs to develop. And the action is incredibly well-written and engrossing. It's the kind of thing that becomes headcanon about two chapters in. The only problem I have with it is its sequel, which is unfinished at 300,000+ words and hasn't been updated in quite a while. I violated my own "Don't Read WsIP" rule for it and now I'm left yearning for the rest of it, so be forewarned.

The Ladies Book Club of the Ninety-Ninth Precinct (2335 words) by igrockspock
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Brooklyn Nine-Nine (TV)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Rosa Diaz, Amy Santiago, Jake Peralta
Summary:
The rules of the book club are as follows:

1. Book club is called book club. If you have some other stupid name for it, don't say it out loud.
2. No inviting boys.
3. No inviting Gina. She only reads Twilight.
4. No graphic violence (in books, or at meetings).
5. Nothing approximating a romance novel.
6. No setting disagreeable selections on fire.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is filling the hole left by Parks and Rec for me, something I've really needed this year. This fic is so in character for Amy and Rosa, and the dialogue is spot-on:

"Jake's not coming," Rosa says.

Amy winces. "I'm sorry, I know you didn't want him to join, but I just didn't feel right about excluding him. I kind of told him about the meeting."

"I know," Rosa says. "So I told him we were meeting in the evidence room. And then I locked him in the evidence room."

“Rosa,” Amy says reprovingly. “I know that Jake doesn’t share our appreciation of literature, but --”

“But nothing,” Rosa snaps. “We’re cops. We spend all our time with dudes. This is my girl’s night.”

Amy’s face lights up. “Wait a second. I’m your girls night?”

Rosa glowers. “We never order pink drinks. Ever.”

Cookie Jar, NY (16275 words) by Siria
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America (Movies), Agent Carter (TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Peggy Carter/Steve Rogers, James "Bucky" Barnes/Sam Wilson
Characters: Angie Martinelli
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe, Alternate Universe - Hallmark
Summary:
Aunt Sarah's Cookies and Confectionery Co. may operate at a loss, but it's the lifeblood of the small town of Cookie Jar. Business executive Peggy Carter has been sent there on a simple assignment: get the company's owner to agree to a sell off. But what was supposed to be a simple assignment gets complicated when Peggy meets Steve Rogers, who's determined to keep his factory open. Though Peggy's a big city girl at heart, there's something about this small town that she finds intriguing-and something about a certain stubborn factory owner, too.

Okay, so...I mentioned the last couple months of 2016 were awful, right? Thanks to my sister, who convinced me the numbing comfort of Hallmark Christmas movies are worth the embarrassment of actually watching the things (and some of them are not so bad, even if they're totally predictable! Amy Acker was an ex-ballerina who learned to love and dance again! One is a Christmassy take on Roman Holiday!), I ended up watching...well, a lot of Hallmark Christmas movies, including the one upon which this fic is riffing.

And the thing is, this is way better than the movie, because the characters from superhero comics are better developed (both in their own universe and here) than the characters in the HM movies. It's sweet and simple, full of banter and cameos and plot twists you see coming from a mile away and you don't care because they make you happy. Or at least they make me happy. It's like reading a classic 90s rom com.
