Today I taught several classes at a Montessori school; the students were ages 3-6. Two actual conversations:

Little Girl, making her magnet to take home: I'm going to be a scientist when I grow up!
Me: That's great! What kind of scientist will you be?
LG: A Magnet Scientist!!

Little Boy, choosing a free time activity after class: Gotta get those Legos!
Me: I would choose Legos, too. I love Legos.
LB: I have FOUR BOXES of Legos at home.
Me: Wow, I want to come and play at your house.
LB: Okay! It's 7508 Walnut Court!* See you later!

(*Not his actual address; I don't even remember what it was.)

Also, when one of the teachers and I were talking about how hot it is (this is the third day in a row of temps in the 90s and heat indices in the 105-118 range), I said, "It must be like winter, having the kids cooped up inside all day when it's too hot to even send them out."

She said, "Well, as a friend of mine said, I'll take this over winter because you don't have to shovel sunshine."

I laughed, but honestly? Shoveling snow doesn't render me incapable of creative or rational thought, nor does it rob me of my will to live. If I ever start to talk about moving/retiring "somewhere warm," someone kick me, okay?

Which reminds me...my bribe to myself for getting up and going early this morning was that I could get iced coffee (or something even foofier) on my way home, and I forgot because I a) had to wait out a funeral procession at one intersection and b) had to take a detour around another because it was swarming with cops--I found out once I got home there'd been a robbery and the suspects were thought to be on the adjacent golf course.

So maybe I'll throw on my sandals and run over to the coffee place. I didn't have any caffeine yesterday and I developed a massive headache right at the point where it was too late to drink any, or I'd have been up all night.
