Yuletide!

Adding to the list of "things about which I've been slow to post"...

It's been a busy holiday season in general, from before Thansgiving onward, and so not only did the actual writing of my assignment get tight, I didn't get the chance to write all the treats I'd hoped to nor to read all the fics that have tempted me. Luckily there's a whole year ahead to write NYR stories and explore the 2014 collections.

This was an amazing year as a recipient; I was lucky enough to receive two longish (for Yuletide) fics, both of them juicy, detail-filled looks at fandoms that are so, so close to my heart. I keep going back to both of them, thinking about them, rehashing moments, being delighted by the character interactions and craftsmanship of the stories. And both, it turns out, were written by people I've been friends with on LJ for years!

From amilyn, I received fic for the media fandom of my heart, the one that got me deeply into this whole writing thing in the first place. The established relationships painted among my three favorite characters are what makes this fic for me. Gary and Toni are solid, but still bantey, and Marissa and Gary's friendship is stronger than ever.

When Tomorrow is a Fixed Point (4181 words) by Amilyn
Chapters: 3/3
Fandom: Early Edition
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Toni Brigatti/Gary Hobson
Characters: Marissa Clark, Gary Hobson, Toni Brigatti
Additional Tags: September 11 Attacks, 5 Things, 3 Things
Summary: Three ways September 11 might have happened in Gary Hobson's world.

And from ionescribens, I received a story continuing the adventures of Kit and Nat from The Witch of Blackbird Pond, a book that's been a continual presence in my life for more than 30 years. The historical details and viewpoints reflect what must have been a lot of research, the look at Kit facing and trying to do something about her own privilege draws a direct line from her eyes beginning to open in Wethersfield to a fantastic possible future for her, and her relationship with Nat (my first book boyfriend!) is sweetly, sweepingly romantic.

The Witch of Barbados (4385 words) by Ione
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Witch of Blackbird Pond - Elizabeth George Speare
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Nat Eaton/Kit Tyler
Characters: Nat Eaton, Kit Tyler, mrs. Eaton, Captain Eaton
Additional Tags: tall ships, Barbados, Quakers, Slave Trade
Summary: Newlyweds Kit and Nat Eaton sail to Barbados . . . where Kit has a secret plan.

I wrote one gift story and one treat:

Rory Red Coat (7340 words) by akamarykate
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Little Red Riding Hood (Fairy Tale)
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Summary: "A baker keeps her secrets," Gran always told Rory. What would happen to Gran if someone--or something--took them away?

I had a lot of fun imagining the details of this one, and figuring out how to bring the fairy tale into a modern city setting.

A Charming Afternoon (984 words) by akamarykate
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Austenland - All Media Types
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Jane Hayes, Miss Elizabeth Charming
Summary: Jane is rescued from tedium by an unlikely new friend.

I was so happy to see a request I could treat from
skogkatt, who's written several lovely things for me in Yuletides past. If you haven't seen Austenland (based on the book by Shannon Hale, who's also written some wonderful fairy tale-based MG&YA stories), I highly recommend it for when you want something fluffy and fun.

In other fannish news, I just got a terribly fun card for the next round of
trope_bingo! I suspect it will inspire me to tackle some of the treats I'd thought about writing for Yuletide, not to mention the smallfandombang story I'm diving back into today, as I have a handful of weeks to finish a passable draft on that. And, you know, there remain all my non-fanfic writing projects, which were shifted to the side over the last month. Wheee....
