A light political rant

In response to this editorial (Bill of Rights needs FDR economic plan) from the Red and Black, UGA's student newspaper. I commented there but it has been nearly 24-hours and it has not been approved so I thought I would repost my comments here:

It is disappointing to see that Mr. Rich has not learned any more of basic economics since I last read one of his opinion pieces.

You say that we cannot have capitalism and democracy, the world and history would beg to differ. The greatest flourishing of democracy has been built on the back of the economic success of capitalism. Look at Europe, the Americas, Japan, India, the list goes on.

"Our No. 1 economic right is the freedom to enter into a subservient role in the workplace." I am calling nonsense on this from the start. Start your own business then, alone or in a partnership, or work for people who will respect you as a person. Not everyone is a cog in the machine or treated as such. I am sorry you have had such poor experience in the workplace but they are not the only kind of job out there. Many people find satisfaction in their work even when working for others.

This is not to say that capitalism is perfect, to paraphrase Churchill "Indeed, it has been said that capitalism is the worst form of economics except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."

Capitalism gives us modern America. The sort of society that emerges from the idea of an 'Economic Bill of Rights' are such economic powerhouses and champions of liberty as Cuba and North Korea.
