So I saw Sin City last week and Constantine the week before. Two films, based on comic books, both rated 'R'. Both were a lot of fun. I had not read either comic prior to watching the films so I went in not expecting the films to be faithful to anything, so I enjoyed them all the more for it.
Constantine was a creepy supernatural movie that worked pretty well overall. Keanu Reeves did a fine job playing himself and the script was tailored nicely enough that it fit him quite well. The special effects were very good and the depictions of Hell were very spectacular. The story itself felt pretty familiar (demonic forces wanting to use a powerful artifact to rule the world), but the way it was executed was sharp enough that it felt pretty fresh.
Sin City was one of those films that I hadn't even heard was in development so when it came out it was a very nice surprise. Kind of reminded me of Dark City, The Matrix, and The Fifth Element in that way....a film that I wasn't expecting to come out that turned out to be a huge amount of fun. It had the whole black and white film noir look and feel down pat, with splashes of color in just the right places to bring attention to certain things on the screen. I've never before seen a movie that captured the look of a comic book so perfectly as this one. And the performances were all awesome. And the violence...heh, this film was very ballsy in the way it depicted some truly gruesome things being done to people, using false color for the blood to avoid an NC-17 rating. Most clever. This is one movie that really got it all right.
