Despicable Man
"A man becomes a man when he is misunderstood by women."

-

"Jay! Jay! Lil' brother!" Moses called out, running to catch up with the smaller boy.

It was a bright, typical day in Werites Beacon. The sun was shining, people were chatting, and in the background one could hear the Bouncers beginning a fresh verse of song. Most would say it was a beautiful day.

Jay, however, just considered it another day, kept walking, and tried to ignore the bandit's hoarse calls.

"'Ey! You're ignoring me!"

"Always one to point out the obvious, aren't you, Moses?" Jay stopped, unable to resist shooting back. It was a compulsion. Every time, Jay realized he was just feeding the fire, but every time it was just too tempting. They say it's shameful to challenge an unarmed man to a battle of wits, but Moses was really more of a practice dummy. The bandit ignored Jay's retort. The boy waited expectantly. Whenever Moses purposefully ignored a jibe, it usually meant he had something on his mind.

"Hey, why're you in town anyways? You don't come 'round too often anymore," the bandit gave an almost childish pout.

"Well, I don't live here," Jay reminded pointedly. "I've been busy."

"Busy with what?" Moses didn't sound convinced at all.

"Nothing a stupid bandit like you could wrap your head around," Jay shrugged and shook his head, a trace of a smile on his lips. "Now if you excuse me, I have work to do," he turned and began to walk again. Moses paused for a second, deciding whether he should turn that into a full-blown argument or not. Nah, wasn't worth it, he finally decided, just following Jay. It was easy for Moses to keep up with the dark-haired boy, easily matching two of Jay's strides for every one of his. They walked past the weapons shop in silence. Finally, Jay stopped again. He turned to Moses, looking rather annoyed.

"What, are you following me around waiting for a treat? I'm working, and it's very hard to be 'Unseen' with a red-haired giant following me," he folded his arms.

"Practically everyone in town knows you all ready, Jay," the bandit argued. Jay seemed slightly annoyed to be reminded of that.

"It's a matter of principle."

"Psh. Principle. I jus' miss you, lil' brother!" Moses shrugged off Jay's usual attitude and grinned widely. Jay felt the usual horror that foreshadowed an attempt to hug. Reflexively, he took a step back to avoid the bandit's tanned arms, quickly followed by another. However, he wasn't expecting Moses to really follow-through: before he could take a third back step he was scooped up.

"A-ah-!" Jay exclaimed, suddenly being lifted up into the air. Moses was snickering.

"Gotcha! C'mon lil' brother, I'll carry ya. Yer goin' to the fountain, right?" he grinned widely.

"I can walk there," Jay reminded, voice a hiss.

" 'Course you can!" Moses sounded offended. "Jus' how often do I get to see my Lil' brother?" he had started walking, holding the struggling Jay tightly against his shoulder. Jay looked murderous, but eventually his kicks died down. The bad thing about Moses finally being useful in battle was that he was now able to endure most of the physical punishment Jay could deal him. The informant just closed his eyes and prayed this would be over soon; meanwhile Moses had started to whistle.

The fountain plaza, of course, was filled with people. Couples were talking, friends were squabbling, and some folk were just enjoying the day. All of them took notice of the tall bandit and his hostage, much to Jay's humiliation. Most quickly returned to their business, except for two.

"Sandor! Jay!" Chloe exclaimed, surprised to see them. Moses quickly recognized her and her friend and joined them by the fountain's edge.

"'Ey Chloe. 'Ey Elsa," Moses grinned and waved. "Say hi, lil' brother," Moses shrugged the shoulder he was holding Jay against. The boy stayed dejectedly silent.

"Good morning Moses, good morning Jay," Elsa smiled. There was still no response from Jay.

"...Was it really necessary for you to carry him?" the knight stared.

"Nah, I jus' wanted to," Moses nodded brightly. "He's my lil' brother after all," he added while finally setting Jay down. The smaller boy had a dark frown etched on his face, and eyes that promised revenge.

"That's so sweet," Elsa commented. "I kind of wish I had an older brother..."

"Someone like Sandor?" Chloe asked. She herself couldn't imagine being 'related' in any way to the bandit. "I suppose he does make an excellent big brother..."

"He doesn't, really," Jay interrupted, dusting off the front of his shirt. He met three expectant looks. "You don't want an older brother like him, Elsa."

"What're you tryin' to say, Jay?" Moses' temper flared as he leaned over the boy.

"Yes, what?" Elsa echoed, confused.

"I'm saying you have a brother complex, don't you?" Jay smiled at Moses, although that smile was laced with poison. It was unclear whether he was getting vengeance or just having fun at the bandit's expense. It could have been both. "You just want me, a small and innocent boy, to follow you around going," Jay's voice got slightly higher, almost breathy, " 'Big brother! Big brother!' don't you?" the tone, combined with Jay leaning up closer to Moses' face, made the bandit nervous. He took a step back, hints of a blush showing up over his tan complexion.

"All that fawning over Grune was just a cover up, wasn't it? You don't want a woman, you want a 'brother,' " Jay's tone was still almost seductive. Moses, for the life of him, couldn't think of a reply. He stood, dumbstruck.

"Sandor!" Chloe was blushing as well, embarrassed just at hearing it. "I-Is that true?"

"Wh-what?! O-Of course it ain't!" Moses stammered, snapping out of his trance. It was just enough stuttering to add doubt to the two girls.

"Despicable." Chloe shook her head, ushering Jay over towards her with a hand. The informant went with it, flashing Moses a victorious look.

"Despicable," Elsa repeated, doing her best to mimic her idol.

The two girls turned their back and started to walk away, taking a very smug Jay with them. Moses was left staring. A few seconds passed while Moses registered what exactly had just happened.

"What?! I'm tellin' ya, it ain't like that! I ain't like that! Damn it Jay!"
