Stupid Livejournal doesn't allow me to upload a picture of my amazing lunch, so I thought I'd write my first overall impression of Imaginaerum by Nightwish instead. New Nightwish albums are always intensely anticipated, as they take so many years to come out. However, it works in everyone's favour - the outcome is always worth the wait.
Thus, I am just going to list a couple of thoughts of each track - I am no one to judge music technically, so this is just more about the feelings I get when listening to the album.
Taikatalvi: The title must be a reference to the Moomin book of the same name (Engl. Winter in Moomin Valley). It is a very nice opening track with Marco's soft vocals, and noticeably a different beginning for the album. Once opens with dynamic Dark Chest of Wonders and Dark Passion Play sets the scene with the mammoth song Poet and the Pendulum. Taikatalvi is my favourite Finnish song they have released.
Storytime: This one reminds me of Amaranth. A catchy single release that develops the theme of the album further.
Ghost River: This song takes turn to heavier. A nice dialogue between Anette and Marco, but I don't have particular urges to listen to this one.
Slow, Love, Slow: I was a bit confused about this jazzy track, as it's something new for Nighwish. At first listening, I was mainly confused but the more I listen to it, the better it gets. I love Anette's alto and proves how versatile she is. I love it! Very atmospheric.
I Want My Tears Back: This is a very basic rock song. Nevertheless, it makes me quite cheerful and I love the bagpipes!
Scaretale: Such an obvious ode to Danny Elfman! I like this one a lot. Marco excels himself - I love his craziness. Thematically it's a bit too similar to Alice Cooper (e.g. Welcome to my nightmare) to bring anything new. However, I guess childhood nightmares are an everlasting, classic theme to explore.
Arabesque: For some reason this little outro reminds of video game music. In a good way though.
Turn Loose The Mermaids: Definitely in top three of the album and one of the best ones ever by the band! Very touching. Apparently it is a depiction of the death of Tuomas Holopainen's Grandfather. I'm loving the Celtic influence. Could listen to it easily on repeat.
Rest Calm: Not a huge fan of this one. Gets quite repetitive. Maybe I should study the lyrics further to bring more meaning to it.
The Crow, The Owl and The Dove: This track sticks in my head easily. It's quite pretty, easy to listen and digest.
Last Ride Of The Day: Gotta love this one as well! Probably my favourite of the album at the moment. Catchy, big, pretty intense, but overall very positive towards life.
Song Of Myself: The compulsory mammoth song of the album. The song is intense as expected and even though there aren't as dramatic changes throughout the song as in the previous equivalent ones, it is interesting for the first seven minutes. The last seven minutes consist of friends and family of the band members reading a poem or extracts from several poems. They are very nice and everything, but seven minutes of that is just too much. Particularly in Finnish accent.
Imaginaerum: The title track is a perfect ending for the album. It sounds so much like film music that it's unbelievable.
Conclusion: It is a very enjoyable album, which I definitely keep listening to. The band have clearly taken risks, which I think have been successful ones. However, there is no other Nighwish album like Once!
