Vala sat on her bed, door closed and concentrating heavily on the books she'd gotten from the library and trying to write her essay for tomorrow. There's a lot of frowning, muttering, and flipping of pages. But concentrating on this means she's not concentrating of Cam being gone, why he's gone, or the unopened letter addressed to him she found in ( Read more... )

It'd been a long an grueling day, Cameron felt like it just wouldn't pass. When there finally seemed a pause where he didn't have to be somewhere, he snatched Emily's cell phone and went outside. He just prayed that Vala was somewhere where she could actually hear the telephone.

When the phone rang, Vala snatched it up immediately. "Vala."

"Yo," Cameron said automatically and closed his eyes in relief. The rest of the words kinda escaped him, though.

"What's happening, YoYo? Is your father all right? What's going on?"

He knew this was coming, but he's still not sure how to say this despite hearing his mother on the telephone the whole day to inform the entire family. "I'm at the hospital. My dad's... he's stable. He's... he's definitely not alright." It's followed by a string of curses that normal never would leave Cameron's mouth.

He closed his eyes and rubbed a hand through his hair. "He's..." his voice broke as he continued, "they had to amputate. Both of them. Both of his fucking legs." He kicked at the pavement.

"Oh, gods, Cam, I'm sorry!" She didn't know what else she could say. She didn't even know what or how much they could do for him in this place. "I'm so sorry." She paused for a moment. "Are you all right?" she asked, even knowing what a stupid question it was.

He laughed, but it definitely wasn't a good sign. "No, but I've got my legs. I don't know, Vala. I... I wish you were here."

"I can come...," she trailed off. This was very much a family thing, and while they'd all been polite to her over Crissmass, she still had the impression that her being there might just make things worse. "...uh, if you think that would help?"

"It would," because the suggestion alone was somehow comforting, "but you'd be wasting your time. Mom wants me to go back tomorrow and dad is agreeing. Something about not missing too many classes and she says they'll be fine."

"Well, o.k.," she said. "Just let me know when you get back here, o.k.? Give me a call on my cell....

She sighed. "Is there anything I can do?"

"Just this," He said softly. "I love you."

He closed his eyes and just allowed himself to revel in the sound of her voice. "I should go back inside," he finally said reluctant to hang up.

"Go on then," she said, despite wanting to keep him on the line all to herself. "They need you right now. I'll see you ttomorrow, o.k.?"
