Reminiscences and tough decisions about food

Ten years ago today, I arrived in Glasgow, Scotland. It was the starting point of a three week trip I had carefully planned, travelling in a circular path: Glasgow --> Fort William --> Inverness via Kyle of Lochalsh* --> Aberdeen --> Perth --> Glasgow. And from those main stops, where I stayed anywhere from 2-4 days, I'd pop over to nearby areas for little day trips to places like Stirling, Oban, Glencoe, the Isle of Lewis, Dunnottar, and Glamis. I saw many wonderful, rubble-y castles (I called this my Rubble and Ruin Tour of Scotland), old cemeteries, a stone circle, and some extraordinary landscapes.

My wander is lusting to go back to Britain and see more of the Highlands and the many islands off the west coast, as well as the parts of England I've not had a chance to visit yet. Oh well, at least I have an appropriate icon of the Callanish Standing Stones on the Isle of Lewis for this entry. I was there! I was there!

I suppose I ought to stop sulking about not being able to travel and make further attempts to narrow down the Thanksgiving menu. I started off with the dishes from last year I wanted to repeat (which is pretty much all of them) and throw in a couple of new ones to change things up a little and diversify the menu. A "couple" ended up being six for a grand total of ten dishes. *facepalm* They all just sound so tasty. Well, all but one: the brussels sprouts. I'm not a fan. In fact, it's safe to say I loathe them, but I found a recipe by the Barefoot Contessa which brussels sprouts haters like me have raved about. Never say I wasn't willing to give something a second chance, although in this case it's more like three or four chances, so it just might come down to the fact that I hate brussels sprouts and always will.

*I only say "via Kyle of Lochalsh" because I unwittingly ended up being stuck there for a while. From my travel journal entry on Tuesday, October 13, 1998, 12:30PM: In the infinite wisdom of Scot Rail and Citylink buses, the train to Inverness left 15 min. before the bus I was on arrived. I'm stuck here until after 5:00PM waiting for the next train. (And let me say, there was not much to see there.) Looks like public transit is crazy everywhere.

(Man, LJ spell check does not like Scottish place names!)
