Antifolk?

(I reused someone's newspaper I found in the recycling area on my floor) so I happened upon this article saturday morning. . .

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/11/arts/music/11folk.html?ref=arts

(What is up with antifolk? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antifolk )

I skimmed it a bit. . .

"too bad I can't go," thought I. Thoughts occurred. "Oh dude it starts at noon -- I can go!"

After delays due to technical shelf building difficulties and an Urban Outfitters sale, I arrived at the park at 3. . .

The first performer was iffy (thank goodness nearly everyone played just one song). . . she sang about being a lonely bass player if i recall (she seemed like a depressed heavy-metla rocker but that's only one girl's opinion. I stayed still . . . and dug most of the performers which were pretty folksy or with catchy and/or kitschy tunes. Bands/people I found notable for myself =

1. The Bowmans (midwestern twins w/ a keyboardist--they performed "Make it Last" you can listen to them on their myspace -- link below -- Kinda reminds me of Sarah Harmer perhaps mixed with a down-home country feel)
http://www.myspace.com/thebowmans

2. the art society for girls - performed "cecil b. demille, part 2"
- I saw the guy, Daoud Tyler-Ameen, perform a couple of songs at the Sidewalk Cafe tonight. V. good. tonight he performed with a girl/friend. Good harmonization. I purchased his demo cd for a $1 if you want to give it a listen. I can't quite put my finger on what art society's music reminds me of.

3. Creaky Boards - performed "let's go live on a farm" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creaky_Boards)
Catchy/fun song. If I'm not at work I may go see them at the Sidewalk. . .
oh here's a link for more info on the festival in general: http://www.antifolk.net/

(i'm all about the links)

4. Some guy singing some song about people with ummm . . .deformities - a glass eye, a crutch, maybe a tooth gap. . . "You look good to me. . ." V. catchy. Even the crazy guy in the park dug it. (he was dancing along to some songs, shaking the performers hands, perhaps scaring me once or twice by being a little too close. . .)

5. I enjoyed the last song on Sunday - a singalong featuring all the day's singers, song about three little to make you feel better, "Former President Bush" hilarious

6. Oh yes I can't forget the coolest thing ever. Suzanne Vega sang 3 songs -- one being an a capella version of Tom's Diner w/ the crowd filling in the chorus. I liked her other songs as well.

So tired. . . must sleeeeeeeeeep. . .
