#444: Fuckin' Bus Stop

Mar 03, 2010 22:09

In the past few days I have been approached by people at the same bus stop. Only two people but believe-u-me that is a lot considering that people normally say that my face looks either mean or serious. Sometimes it feels like I am stand offish even if it is not my intention, but I am not going to be all, "Hey, lets be best friends forever already." Not me at all.

With Saul we simply chatted while we waited for the bus.

Today, though, this guy started telling me his life story and all the woes that come with it. He kept saying how he should not have to ride on the bus and he preferred to walk (the irony being, of course, that we were waiting for the bus, but forgiven on the fact that it has been raining on and off the whole week). He hated that on the bus you had to put up with all the annoying people and preferred to get off the bus to catch another (because they are that annoying). Being on the bus did not have the perks of his truck where he could turn on the music, roll down the window, and simply drive.

Unfortunately, like many people, he was laid off (or fired...?) which was how he lost his truck and why now he was riding the bus. Then, he told me how he found another job, it seemed implied through a government program, but they worked the workers too hard and got paid only $9.00/hr so he quit. He literally said, "Fuck that, so I quit." Now he lives off on $900 of unemployment insurance and is waiting for things to turn up since UI does not last forever.

Aren't we all?

Then he told me about how the doctors screwed him over saying he had some things wrong with him when he did not but that he was borderline diabetes. He used to get up at five in the morning to exercise and it would energize him for the day, but lately he has not been consistent. Even though he did not have an excuse not to be considering he was unemployed. Yes, that is exactly what he said. He even said he should be working out in the mornings and evenings, though, he never alluded to why he did not do that if he was capable.

Also, learned from him that men in the area have prostrate problems--

And, really, at this point I start thinking, "Where is that bus?" Because it feels like we have been talking about these two subjects for at least two hours but it has only been about twenty-five minutes. We reached points of silence when he would start again talking about losing his job or men having prostate problems.

So, yes, he went on about men having prostrate problems because they rode bicycles, "You see them riding all the time. You think it wouldn't be a problem when you have seat up your ass the whole day? Fuckin', man's, got to be careful about that, you know, women they don't have to worry but men..." Educated me on how we have to take care of our kidneys since, "You only have two. A liver, a liver can repair itself if it gets damaged but the kidneys can't. And you can live off one kidney but then you only have one..." If something happened to that one we would be fucked. He did not say that last bit but I imagine he would because that is how he spoke.

The bus got there and he said bye. We got on, him sitting towards the end, I sat towards the front and went to work.
