Wheezing in the breeze.

The entire 7.8 kilometre Rideau Canal is finally open for skating. I have no idea why i find this so exciting, it's just been so long since i've done any outdoor activity at all. I decided to skate home from class yesterday morning...there were a ton of people on the ice since it was the opening Saturday of the Winterlude festival. Like an idiot, i completely forgot to bring enough money for a BeaverTail. I had to glide by the huts with my hand over my face just to avoid being mocked by the delicious odour.
It was a great time, but I must admit I nearly died. For the first kilometre I was soaring along, and my face beaming with the idea of being back on skates again, but by the time I rounded the first corner my lungs had crawled up into my throat and were preparing to jump out of my mouth in order to free themselves from further torture. My beaming face likely turned a sickly pale green, and it didn't take long before my legs felt like brittle twigs. I guess I was going at a pretty fast pace in all my excitement, and it is a considerable length to skate, but good god...what a way to become acutely aware of your own mortality. I'm going to go at it again once my body recovers, and hopefully this'll get me back in some sort of reasonable physical condition.
