I did wonder about the obvious unfolding of the cracksman tools. While the steampunk didn't bother me (I'm reading more about it now), I do admit that it was a little much for the times

We knew RDJ was going to be scruffy. In what movie is he not scruffy? The only time I remember seeing him unscruffy is when he went on all the talk shows to say what an ass he'd been with that whole hooker thing and his drinking problem.
Heh. I bet Guy Ritchie is kicking himself for not coming up with the "argue over who gets Holmes" idea. That would have been far better.
I think Mary = jealous Holmes. I mean, really. SIGN totally had a very jealous Holmes. It's so obvious.
The pacing of those older movies are different than the pacing of stories to-day. Reading the canon is also a slower pace, but once ACD had some basic details down, he was very good with the action. (Personally, I think the Raffles stories are pretty modern in regards to pacing; they are very fast-paced stories because Hornung didn't structure his stories like ACD did. Which is probably why many people see them as "not as well-written" and comes off as fluffy.)
