Dear Yuletide Santa

For the brave soul who had the misfortune of drawing my lot--DON'T PANIC!

First of all--DON'T PANIC! I thought it was important to emphasize that in large, friendly letters on the cover of this missive. (Explanation of that reference can be found on page 42. And that should give you a good idea on my sense of humour. If that doesn't help, look up Douglas Adams. And the meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything. And the wearing of digital watches. Okay, I'll stop now. Gotta get to the chemist's anyway.)

You were probably matched with me because of request number 3, which is a pretty rare request, and I understand if you don't have a clue about requests 1 and 2. Which means, of course, I get to introduce you to them! Yay! (And if it's another way 'round, then I can introduce you to the other requests! Double yay!)

Just remember all the requests are related to Sherlock Holmes, and you'll do fine.

Request #1: E.W. Hornung - Raffles series

If you've never read those stories, and you're a fan of either Victorian-era crime and mysteries, or of slash in general, it's time to be introduced! Raffles is a gentleman burglar, and his accomplice is Bunny. It was written by Arthur Conan Doyle's brother-in-law, and most say as an inversion to his Sherlock Holmes stories. The two men were good friends and probably beta'ed for one another all the time. They tossed ideas off one another, and Raffles was one of them. Hornung gave Doyle a run for his money; Raffles was just as popular as Holmes back at the turn of the century, but Holmes had the power of endurance that Raffles sadly has not had.

I want to change all that! You can read all the stories free online (copyright expired in 1974), and I have them up on my site: The Annotated A.J. Raffles along with all other pertinent details. If you like Sherlock Holmes, you'll also enjoy Raffles. Very fun and fast-paced, it's also more light-hearted and witty, too.

Now, it's true that Raffles was built for slash, but I'm totally open in this category simply because I want to see more Raffles stories, period. Something funny, something fun, something wicked, something off-the-wall--you name it! Fair warning: if you choose this request (or spring Raffles on me in your story in any form), your story will be linked to from the Annotated AJR site. There can never be too much Raffles in the world!

Request #2: Arthur Conan Doyle - Sherlock Holmes series

It's said that you can go anywhere in the world--anywhere at all--and even if you don't speak the language, if you said, "Sherlock Holmes," it's 100% likely the person would nod and speak your ear off. He's second only to Jesus as the most written-about person on the planet.

So I know you know who he is, but in this request, I got particulars.

That's right. I want slash. I can go for friendship between Holmes and Watson, too, if you're totally stumped. For me, I don't care about the mystery, I just want to see them together in all their Holmesie-Watsonish ways.

However, if you do like slash, I want as Victorian as you've got. I want all the naughty, nasty, dirty Victorian inverted underground ways that these two crime-fighters can offer! Using Victorian jargon will make my toes tingle.

For super extra bonus points, you can do a crossover between request numbers 1 and 2! You'd probably melt my brain if you did that very specific request I made (you know the one, 'cause you got the email; additional note on that: make it a role-play where Holmes is Captain Basil--you know you want to!) for Holmes/Watson and added Raffles/Bunny somehow to it....

Request #3: Probe (tv)

It was on American television (ABC) in 1988 as a season-filler for something else that was cancelled. (And there was a writer's strike in there somewhere as well, I believe.) It was co-created by Isaac Asmov, so it's got that smart and quirky sci-fi thing going for it. Even better, it's modeled after Holmes and Watson! Only the Holmes-like fellow is Austin James (played by the good-looking Parker Stevenson) and his Watson is a woman named Mickey Castle.

Visit Probe Resurrected for episode guides, links to other fan sites, and of course complete episodes!

I am most interested in the quirkiness of the characters in general, so I'd rather have a gen story. If you want to combine this with some Holmesian sleuthing, that would be grand. Perhaps Austin gets them stuck in a computer virtual reality, and the only way back home is for Austin and Mickey to play Holmes and Watson! Or you could have them re-visit one of their investigations, or perhaps a missing scene. A little UST between Austin and Mickey's just fine, so long as it doesn't go any further than the TV show went. They definitely had many sweet moments, and that's one of the things I liked about the show.

For the implosion of the sun, if you somehow got all three requests into one story, not only would it be crack-a-licious, you're totally my new best friend EVAR!!!!11!

Whichever request you choose, be sure to have fun with it!

This has been a test of the Emergency Yuletide System. Had this been an actual emergency--YOU'D BE DEAD BY NOW!

There's nothing more to see here. Move along, move along.
