Augh so okay I've been doodling around in my head for a fanmix for Rimmer for weeks now, and I think I've got it down to an actual album length as opposed to an entire iTunes playlist.
1) Red Dwarf Theme Song.
It's cold outside, there's no kind of atmosphere.
I'm all alone, more or less.
Let me fly far away from here,
Fun, fun fun.
In the sun, sun
sun. 2) Synchronicity 2, The Police.
Another industrial ugly morning
The factory belches filth into the sky.
He walks unhindered through the picket lines today
He doesn't think to wonder why.
The secretaries pout and preen like
cheap tarts in a red light street.
But all he ever thinks to do is watch.
And every single meeting with his so-called superior
Is a humiliating kick in the crotch.
Many miles away
Something crawls to the surface
Of a dark
Scottish loch. 3) Spacesuit, They Might Be Giants.
...No lyrics, live performance
here. 4) Ants Marching, Dave Matthews Band.
He wakes up in the morning
Does his teeth bite to eat and he's rolling
Never changes a thing
The week ends the week
begins. 5) Stellar, Incubus.
Meet me in outer space.
We could spend the
night. ...Okay, more of a love song, which should never apply to Rimmer, but anything with outer space in it automatically reminds me of him.
6) Army, Ben Folds Five.
Well I thought about the army,
Dad said, "Son, you're
fucking high." 7) Every Planet We Reach Is Dead, Gorillaz.
Not so much the lyrics, but the mood and the song title.
I love YouTube. 8)One Night In Bangkok, Murray Head.
Get Thai'd! You're talking to a tourist
Whose every move's among the purest
I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine.
This one takes explaining. Rimmer's a Risk nut, and thinks himself as a fantastic plotter/planner/tactical genius, and thus better than the common little oiks, and this song says that in spades. It's also '80s, and anything '80s reminds me of Rimmer.
Enjoy. 9) Dead Man's Party, Oingo Boingo.
I was struck by lighting
Walkin' down the street
I was hit by something last night in my sleep
It's a dead man's party
Who could ask for more?
Everybody's comin', leave your body at the door
Leave your body and
soul at the door... 10) Thoughts Of A Dying Athiest, Muse.
Scares the hell out of me
and the end is all I can see
and it scares the hell out of me
and the end is all I can see.
And I know the moment's near
and there's nothing you can do
look through a faithless eye
are you
afraid to die? 11) Somebody To Love, Queen.
Can anybody find me somebody to love?
Each morning I get up I die a little
Can barely stand on my feet
Take a look in the mirror and cry
Lord what you're doing to me
I have spent all my years in believing you
But I just can't get no relief,
Lord!
Somebody, somebody
Can anybody find me
somebody to love? Rimmer's a very lonely man.
12) Not Scared Terrified, The Servant.
I pulled my coat on tight and stood in the hall
Dust in a shaft of light floating by the wall
I started crying to myself
It wasn't in my head
It was physical
Like ghosts hung on thread
A bunch of chemicals
I started laughing to myself
When you pulled out your heart
I scrambled up
I scrambled up
When you asked me my past
I made it up
I made it up
But now suddenly I feel I'm gonna be okay.
Couldn't find this one on YouTube, but it's a hell of a song.
Nerd.
