From
Wired Selected Excerpts:
There is a strong correlation between being smart and being a nerd, and an even stronger inverse correlation between being a nerd and being popular. Being smart seems to make you unpopular.
If someone had offered me the chance to be the most popular kid in school, but only at the price of being of average intelligence (humor me here), I wouldn't have taken it.
Nerds serve two masters. They want to be popular, certainly, but they want even more to be smart.
Commentary:
This article really made me think about a few key aspects of my life, and the tradeoffs within.
From 3-9th grade, I was the epitome of geeky - had about...1. friend. Spent all most all my time reading, or a bit on the computer. True, I diddn't "enjoy" myself as most did, but it did completly set me up for who I am today, and the wealth of knowledge I do have.
Come 2000, after my boarding school stint in India, I switched my personality drastically. I turned into alot more of a social animal, a hybrid, yes, but a social animal nonetheless....the StealthGeek I am today.
The real thing I'm wondering now is if I wouldn't have better served my own interests by staying true to my geek roots. True, friends are great, but that being said, I do often look around myself and see the plethora of people who are smarter than I am, know so much more than I do, and I do clearly see the negative aspects of my people personality, the time spent which could perhaps be better spent on other endeavors. Guess it's just more stuff to think about with my reevaluation of life.
Ps. That being said, if anyone wants to get together over winter break, let me know - odds are I'll probably plan atleast some crazy stuff.
