life update

Some notes on my life:

1. Law school is really hard; don't go. I mean, it's fun and interesting but also so cut-throat and competitive. Warning. I'm on spring break now and I thought it would be fun and relaxing...nope! I was supposed to go to Montreal, but my friend got mono :-/ Good thing maybe; I have a property midterm around the corner.

2. I presented a paper to the African Studies Graduate Student Conference here at BU last weekend. I talked about universities in Africa. It didn't go quite as well as I would have liked, but it was very interesting. Let's just say that I'm a lawyer and not an academic after all.

3. I will be working at the Ditshwanelo Botswana Centre for Human Rights in Gaborone, Botswana this summer doing anti-death penalty advocacy. www.ditshwanelo.org.bw Botswana has a record of secret executions, mandatory death sentences, and informal clemency proceedings. This may well be Botswana's most serious human rights abuse: except for Zimbabwe, almost all of the rest of Southern Africa has abolished the death penalty. I applied for grants and funding galore. Hopefully I'll get a scholarly research project out of it for a journal note or something next year. A woman in my class will be joining me at Ditswanelo doing completely different stuff, so I won't be going to Africa alone. More later. I've also started learning Setswana!

4. Love life: N/A

5. I'm also starting to compile quite a list of firms to apply to next year. I would love to work in a big private law firm doing Africa practice or international stuff. The law firm receptions are great, plus I've been getting loads of free stuff! :)
