Author's Note of Doom: I've been wanting to write Junseung for some time now. I find Hyunseung to be too much of a contradiction though and hence every time I tried, I've been stopped by a writer's block.
This is totally an experiment inspired by
this amazing song. People who have never read anything by me before, should know that I have a very unique writing style. Before I even knew it, I was writing prose almost like my poetry. Whether it's a good or bad thing, I really don't know.
Dedicated to
peepserror (aka
onjubong) even though I promised her Ontae. Still, she's the reason I have been still trying to write all this time.
The colours clash together. Like they're shouting at the top of their lungs. White background with dark, dirty pavements. It’s like mud is piling up everywhere it can. And he feels even more vulnerable when it’s all so grey. It’s ironic that he's blending so well with the dirty dark.
Dragging his feet, he kicks the mud to the sides. It’s unconscious how he’s trying to get rid of it. Very much like the darkness in his heart. He’s never successful with the latter. And they say he breaks hearts. His is already damaged beyond repair.
He swears that if he listens closely enough he will hear the world shatter. Collide with this sad reality. Running away until there’s no more breath left seemed like such a splendid idea before. Now it lost all its appeal and is rotting together with the long expired lies. Even when he knows he’s being too much, he cannot stop. It became comfortable. The constant and never-ending sadness. So fitting in this concrete world.
He ends up at the same coffee shop as always. Goes there so often that all the waiters know his name. The only fleeting human contact he cannot run away from. The one he’s learned to accept. Almost looks forward to but won’t admit that to himself.
He expects to be asked “The usual one?”. Instead he’s met with a questioning face and his world nearly collapses. Because it’s suddenly so bright and he feels strings mending. Like a needle is working the seams of his frantically beating heart. Thump. Thump. He manages to utter his order before everything turns upside-down. Later when he can’t remember anything, he still can recall the eyes.
The next time, it’s more controlled. His blood stays still. The wind playing sweet melodies and messing with his mind. He doesn’t forget the name this time though and whispers it to the clear blue sky.
It feels like he has forever to memorize. Every eyelash and every laugh. It feels like he can just be still. Every word and every touch. It feels like the world has stopped and is waiting for him to catch up. He doesn’t want to move though so he remains stuck behind.
It’s that one time when he falls asleep at the back of the coffee shop. Warm scarf wrapped around his neck. Welcoming sofa behind his back. Soft music like lullabies. He’s pulled into magic land. Awakened roughly. Right before he was to board the traveling rainbow that was pulling on the sky.
It’s him. Hyunseung. Whispered by the wind so unexpectedly that he tries to stand up. That’s when he’s greeted by a laugh.
“I need to close the shop.”
He doesn’t really react. Doesn’t want to react.
“You can always help me if you don’t feel like going yet.”
And so he does.
Although it’s a few words spoken now and then. Although it’s rare smiles and fleeting touches. Although it really cannot be right. Although…he falls in love so very hard.
It’s darker today. When he thinks about it, it might have been darker already a good few days. It’s raining the moment he closes the coffee shop doors behind. He’s prepared to be greeted by bright smiles. Is met with another gloomy sky. Somehow it feels suddenly like he has absolutely no time. Years seem like seconds and minutes fly by too fast. He blinks and he’s centuries too late. And there’s a strong urge to just shout.
He sits in his spot as usual. Orders the coffee and retreats. Tries a strained smile. No matter how hard he concentrates, the emotions still hang in the air like heavy curtains. So stuffy. So dark.
His muscles are contracting and flexing like they want him to move and ask what is wrong. He halts. Even though he knows it’s time to catch up, he chooses to be left behind.
Then it comes. The cruel twist of fate. Unannounced. Not that it didn’t cross his mind that it will. Not that he haven’t felt the time passing by.
He’s not there anymore. Feels almost like he forgot to get off the bus. Trying to wave to the ghosts of the past. Left with loose seams of his frantically beating heart. Thump. Thump.
