Today I went into work for the morning. Then came back to the hotel for lunch, followed by a walk around the grounds to look at plants. Our site will need landscaping, after all. I don't know how familiar the concept of Xeriscaping is here (I hope I spelled that right). The idea is to use native plants that naturally grow here, thus minimizing the amount of water, pest control, and general maintenance needed. Quite by accident, it sounds like we're trying to have a side business growing fruit. Alex loves mango trees, and I liked (among other things) the tree that "looks for all the world like a banana tree. What is that?" "Banana tree." "It is a banana tree?" "Yes." Cool. Then I saw one complete with bananas. Tourists are amusing but puzzling. I found it difficult to explain that I'd never actually seen bananas growing on a tree before, and it amazed me.
I wonder how easy it would be to grow pineapple plants... They are native, after all.
Anyway, after the walk I went back to my room, took a bath, and crawled back into bed. I'm definitely getting better, but still well below 100%. For no apparent reason, I weighed myself. I've lost a kilogram (2.2 lbs) but I think it's all phlegm. When housekeeping came around, I sat out on the balcony for a bit. I think it's too wierd to stay in the room while someone's cleaning it, and it must be kinda strange for the cleaner, too, to try to do your job with someone else in your way. When I re-entered the room, I noticed that housekeeping shares the hotel staff trait of attention to detail. There's an extra box of tissues on the coffee table and about 3L worth of water bottles lined up on the counter (usually there's two bottles).
Oh, and in response to "questions from my readers" (hee hee, I have 'readers'):
Yes, I have been reunited with my wallet. A coworker on a later flight brought it for me. I have only really needed it once, when I went out shopping for a hat. Most of my meals are at the hotel, and I can just put them on my bill. Not adventurous, true, but much safer on the food allergy front. Plus breakfast is included in the room charge, and a typical lunch is maybe 4 to 5 US dollars for plenty of really good tasty food, tea, and a plate of fruit for dessert. And I get a laundry allowance that works out to about a shirt (or a skirt or a pair of shorts) a day. Sweet!
10K-p: the 10,000 is a level of air filtration/purity in that zone (particles per million, maybe?) not to be confused with a measurement of the pressure. So there are zones that are just "10,000" and other areas where it's 10,000 and also under negative pressure. You can control the whole floor's airflow by having positive pressure zones and negative pressure zones to keep the air moving in one direction only. This way you won't have to worry about, say, aerosolized particles venturing out into rooms where you don't want them to go.
[oh yeah, song of the moment, courtesy of the hotel entertainment: John Denver's "Country Roads." The only thing surprising about the song choices is that they still surprise me. I heard "Tennessee Waltz" at a store the other day. Really.]
