The Vietnam Chronicles: Where Religion and Communism Mix

Oct 31, 2010 10:38

It doesn't look like the Vietnamese Communists adopted Stalinist measures. The deeply religious Vietnamese, mostly Buddhists, have guarded their religious values. Saigon has some majestic Chinese Pagodas and the famous Mariamman Hindu Temple. There's a spiritual sanctity about these temples.

Thankfully commercial tourism hasn't arrived yet to these places. It's pretty obvious that the tourist hordes could easily wreck the sanctity and the ancient spiritual feel of these places. I personally feel that Europe's great churches have lost that spiritual aura mainly as a result of the fact that they have become mere pieces of amusement in the world of capitalism and commercialism.
