Wondering the city late last night with an Alex from 'tech
was nice. We met a rather large, very loud caterpillar-tracked monster
crawling along to Chinatown from the financial district, chewing up
pavement. We also met a couple utterly huge monsters with triangular
heads, wheels taller than me; they were carrying gravel at Embarcadero.
We would've taken a closer look at the skating rink there, if it were
not for a very visible security guard; as it is, we couldn't tell if
there was ice under all that water. I always feel awkward pointedly
ignoring beggars, and empty midnight streets somehow make it worse. On
touristy evening streets, one suspects that the pitiful look is fake,
and that rather large quantities of money are being collected. A couple
blocks worth of 70's cars synchronously backing up a busy street is a
rather surreal spectacle; i suppose that happens when movies are being
filmed.
I didn't do anywhere near as much math as i'd like to have done this weekend.
The little math i did was with
easwaran at the marina. There are funny critters there, not quite bushy-tailed enough to be squirrels,
too big to be chipmunks. We concluded that someone was running an
underground squirrel-grooming salon, resulting in shaved-looking
squirrels ducking in and out of holes in the ground. They seemed to
like burrowing more than climbing.
The moon is full and pretty in a clear sky, with mars (i'm
guessing) right next to it. By the way, i realized i don't know: does
the moon go around the earth in the same direction as the earth
rotates, or opposite?
