I'm so sorry about your friend's ordeal. Just this week a fourteen year old girl in my hometown killed herself because she was being judged, bullied and taunted at school by kids who were in support of the eighteen year old who committed statutory rape against her. And then the charges against the perp were dropped because the only witness to the crime - the victim - is dead. (Reminds me of the "joke" about the man who murdered both his parents, then pleaded for mercy from the court because he was an orphan...) Needless to say, the victim's mother was ranting and raving when the TV reporters encountered her, ready to kill the bastard responsible for her daughter's death.

And now the government, in all its tender sensitivity, wants to get in on the nonconsentual groping of people who may be trying to get on with their lives after a nightmare like rape.

If you can, get a copy of this book: The Magna Carta Manifesto, by Peter Linebaugh. Available here: www.ucpress.edu ... but your local library may have a copy. It is relevant to all the crap we're being put through, and it shows that rat-bastard governments have been around always, and always tried to get ugly...okay, uglier...until the people wised up and slapped them down. We need justice, dammit! And all we're getting is tyranny.

That case is a black mark against our shared home state.

Don't know if you're in my age range (baby-boomer), but this used to be a decent place to live, relatively speaking.

Now it's a horror, where the auto industry grows rich on the fact that no family can live on one income, so everyone must work, and every individual must have a car. Yet they go bankrupt due to the outrageous pay and bonuses their top management recieve, and they get government bail-outs while cutting more workers from their payroll. And all those unemployed or merely underpaid workers are taking out their frustrations on each other through episodes of road rage in the cars they must have yet can't afford.

We have a new governor who outsourced jobs to China, sold the company (Gateway) to Chinese interests, then successfully campaigned on the fact that his opponent was mayor of the state capital while joblessness was increasing.

It's all gone insane, and I'm glad I'm not young anymore. Things are going to keep getting uglier and uglier, I fear, until there's no choice for the public but to get nasty right back at the capitalist privatisers.

And of course, it's all blamed on the victim. Like any girl unlucky enough to be violated by someone stronger, older, and more popular.

Most of the time everything is blamed on the victim/s.

I read that one. Here - http://www.journalfen.net/community/unfunnybusiness/291142.html
It made me feel faint, it was so horrible to even think of.

I've been having a nice (/sarcasm) time since I returned. I returned because of my efforts to find news of someone who'd just failed in a suicide bid, and then I find that my friend's rapist has been acquitted, and now this.

I was applying to a nice little research programme in the US and now I'm going to reconsider applying.

Can't say I blame you. We're teetering on the edge of full blown fascist tyranny here.

For God's sake, Oprah had George Wanker Bush on her show, to promote his book of memoirs...that freaking coke-head drunk can scarcely remember what DAY it is. AND he's a monster of depravity. What was she THINKING?!

(Oh, that's right: ratings. Plus, he's friends with the people who run the network. And she's rich as Croesus, so that makes him her friend, too. Elites have to stick together, after all.)

am honestly scared to complete the application. I mean - while entering US at an airport (provided I get through, ofcourse) what do I have ? A choice between possible cancer and definite trauma ?

The fact that Dubya (at least) once danced on a bar table naked always makes me better. Slightly. Especially in view of the things his govt started and which are being enhanced now - like violation of ppl as a matter of policy. Btw, I don't suppose Oprah made a mention of that nude dance, did she now ?

Don't think the current one's any better. No way he is. Every time I see him on TV, an alarm starts ringing in my head. No idea why factually. Maybe ppl will find out when its too late.

Would it amuse ppl if mentioned here that in the European places I have been to, I have been treated with the utmost respect in all places ? That definitely doesn't make me want to return to the USA. No matter how tasty the study programme might sound like.

Europe has a much better reputation and aura now than the US. My great-niece lives and works in Germany, and loves it.

Obama is a major disappointment because everyone really seemed to believe he was going to be different from the Bushes, and he's obviously just a place-holder until they can get the next Bush brother ready to take over the presidency via another stolen election. I look for them to rape the Constitution some more, perhaps make the presidency hereditary and perpetual to their family during the next Bush tenancy of the White House.

Didn't watch the Oprah episode, so I don't know if the nude table dance (shudder) was mentioned. This is the first time I've heard of it, in fact. And now I'm going to go bleach my brain-cells and try to get the ugly images out of my head. Thanks so very much...;)

Germany is OK. So are Netherlands, Switzerland, all the Med. countries except France. I don't much like the rest, though, but that's possibly just personal.

Jeb Bush is next ? *Headwall*

Oh come on, I thought everyone knew about the bar table nude dance by the drunken Dubya :D :D Didn't you ? Or maybe you'd just forgotten ?

... in the European places I have been to ...

Except inside the labs. Those were vicious. But mentally so. And the USA labs are idiotic. In every way.
