WARMING UP

I've got an assignment that has to be written today and I'm using this opportunity to fire up the writing muscles again. I haven't had anything like a sustained writing session since finishing the NaNovel on November 27th. I've been going back to edit that work and plotting the final stories for The Long Range, but haven't sat down to type since that day.

My fingers are stretching back out, the gears are a little creaky, but hey that's okay. It won't take long. The muscles remember.

READING UP

I have finished Philip Pullman's HIS DARK MATERIALS trilogy (Northern Lights which is known as The Golden Compass in America, The Subtle Knife and The Golden Compass). Wonderful fantasy work that deeply explores religion, family and how they can all collide with one another. I know my friend Rob has read it and I think he read it because Dennis (I think) said he should and that stayed with me. Since I've been reading more and more this year (more than a dozen novels in addition to the comics and graphic novels/collections that I normally read) and I stumbled across it at the Half Price Bookstore, I thought I should read it. I'm really glad I did. It's over 900 pages long in the volume I got, and so now I have to read something shorter. Ray Bradbury's DANDELION WINE seems perfect for a Christmas-time read. I've been recommended to read LIFE OF PI, too, so I'll need a copy of that (hint hint) along with THE TIME-TRAVELLER'S WIFE and THE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS.

BATTENING DOWN

The weather's been very winterish lately here, with freezing drizzle threatening today. I'm on vacation from Tuesday afternoon through the 3rd of January and I'm looking forward to it. Reading and writing and playing sounds like a helluva lot of fun.

LOOKING OUT

The coming year is another one of ambition for me. I met my goals of writing, of reading and many personal and professional goals, too. 2010 is going to be the year of MORE for me. I have DONE so many things and can see so many, many possibilities it's overwhelming. If this year has been a watershed for me in terms of all my interests, I hope I can continue those things. Success is relative and I have my own definition. 2009 is the first year of success. 2010 will be the second. Thanks for being here so far. I hope you'll stick around for what comes next.
