So I'm working out the things that I think are pretty important for the success of
Jason Arnett dot com: licensing of the stories and the schedule of release.
I think
this license is the one I'm going with, as it allows the purchaser/reader to copy and redistribute the story as long as they attribute it to me and they can't remix or alter the work, nor can they make money off it. I need to explore more the copyright side of things, to be sure that I can do whatever I want with them, and just how that's all going to work. Anyone who knows and can point me to a summary would be thanked in a paper edition of a future collection and get a copy of that edition, too.
I'm making another pass at editing
Teller and
Disconnect before finalizing them for the website. You can click on the titles there to read earlier versions of them, if you like, or you can see the schedule below and notice that
The Well is there, but it will only be after a MASSIVE re-write that I'm working on right now in my 'spare' time.
1. Teller (Free!)
2. Disconnect (June) $1
3. The Well (Free!)
4. Don't Take Me Alive (July) $1
5. The Receivers (August) $1
6. Two Hands (September) $1
7. The Insulated Man (October) $1
The two free stories don't necessarily have release dates assigned, but they are expected to appear in this order on the site.
I'm working on the advertising for the stories right now, and as distasteful as I find the process of it, I'm doing my best to make it work. I don't expect anyone to shell out a buck without being able to sample the story, so each story will have a 1500 word preview, constituting 25% of the tale, that one can read before purchase. I will highly recommend every month, when the new story for that month appears, that the preview be read before you spend. That's the only really sensible way to do this. Each story will have a cover page, the full story and a license notice attached. Each download should run about 22 - 25 pages, the length of a comic book or so.
I'm also writing the FAQ for the site in and around editing and writing some more. All this behind the scenes stuff is the reason I wanted to wait until June to launch the site, and it's even more work than I thought it would be. I'm glad I'm doing things this way.
More to come. Stop by and check in when you can. Or visit the
site itself on Wednesdays for some other updates. I intend to keep the Live Journal here even when that site goes 'live'.
Wow, there's a lot of rambling and disconnect today, isn't there?
