A.N.// Microfiction exercise. I actually sort of love this piece. I was having a massive POTC day yesterday, and this story is an amalgamation of three things i'm obsessed with: the locket of Davy Jones, the track "One Day" from the third film's soundtrack, and the following image. But twisted to fit an original plot.
The air is grey and wet. The sky is a blanket of thick swirls, shadowing the courtyard by the sea. Rows of sodden, off-white chairs sit side-by-side, pools of water collecting on the seats as rain tap dances across the setting. Ribbons and flowers hang lank, petals almost transparent as they tear from the stem and drift off to open sea. Water slides along the stone ground, filling crevices that reflect like lightning, cracking the day into tiny pieces.
By the altar kneels a woman in white, her head bent under a dripping veil that clings to her skin like a shell. The veil trails behind her, curling into the puddles with her washed-out dress. Her bouquet lies dying at her side, drowning in the downpour. The locket around her neck sings a soft, sad tune in her hands, spinning a melody occasionally lost in the throes of the sea.
Lifting her eyes, the bride scans the horizon for a sail, perhaps hidden in the mist. But there is nothing there.
P.S. Download "One Day" here. Do it, it's amazing.
