A.N.// Written for a university task on microfiction. Pick a cliche theme and try to tell a new story. I wasn't sure if this was un-cliche, but i ended up liking what i wrote anyway.
Down below, men charge into battle for all that is good, raise their weapons for all that is good, slay the enemy for all that is good. Warfare rages for generations, parents losing their children, children losing their parents. Families are left in shreds, society in tatters. Hope is most certainly still alight in these harsh times, as are faith and dreams. They are simply masked by the presence of death, as scores of men sacrifice their lives for the cause.
But Good looks down on them with a frown, seeing that the cause has been lost. Disappointment fills His heart as He witnesses His children turning from the light, living in dimmer territory under an umbrella of shade. These soldiers are no longer dying for Him.
Foes storm from all sides, their hearts turned to darkness as they rush in to accomplish their wicked ways. The men of good resist with all they have, but the men of evil are built on pretence, bent on the destruction of good. All that good works for, they wish to ruin. All that good loves, they wish to destroy. That which good has build, they will tear down. Their path is reactionary, determined by good.
Evil is furious. His screams rattle the earth’s foundations as He watches His warriors twisting their ways to the wrong end. He is filled with rage, demanding they obey His word. But their ears are closed against His roars as they work to their own objective. Even His own darkness has been manipulated. Such is the soul of man.
The battlefield is chaos, neither side rising as victor. The world is run by strategy, rather than compassion. Politics, rather than charity. Some live by mercy, others by brutality, but nothing leads to progress. The original conflict becomes a distant memory as new ambitions arise in the hearts of man, and the endpoint is forgotten. However, the war rages on as humanity burns itself to the ground.
Good and Evil exchange a glance, turning Their eyes away from the skirmish below. Neither is in play any longer.
