I never knew such a love existed before I met you.
I remember clearly the day that changed my perspective, beliefs and most of all my life.
I remember you, walking alone down the sidewalk, head bowed down; kicking a soccer ball softly in front of you as you slowly walked along, drenched wet from the rain. Your hands were in your pocket and you had no umbrella to shield you with.
I remember running up to you and offering to share my own black umbrella with you.
I remember you looking up at me with you face in disbelief. You didn’t believe somebody would be so kind in today’s world; you told me later. I held out my other hand as I lifted up the umbrella to shield us both. I told you my name and you whispered it ever so cutely. “ Lee Hyukjae.” It lit up the dreary day for me.
We began to walk with each other in silence, the only sounds were the soft murmuring of the crowd around us and the traffic and cars speeding by. Finally we had reached my building. You smiled the beautiful smile of yours as you gave me a piece of paper and sped off, laughing in the rain.
I had looked down and jumped for joy when I saw what was on it. It was your number; your name and address of your birthday party. December 15th, a day I would never forget either because that was the day a beautiful angel was born into this ugly world.
December 15th, 2007.
Our first planned meeting was your birthday. The sun shone briefly as I approached your door and knocked on it only for it to reveal your delightful face a minute later. Miraculously, the sun’s rays had shone only on you as I gazed upon your face with the present I gave you. It was something simple because I had not really gotten to know you yet. A small sky blue umbrella and a hand made jeweled photo frame was in the gold paper wrapped box.
Nothing made me happier that hour than the joy on your face as you squealed over the jewels. I say hour because later that day, we had planned another get together; just the two of us.
I had a great time getting to know you that night and to see how happy you were amongst your friends. I enjoyed seeing you laughing and smiling. It lifted my heart and that was when I realized somehow, I had grown feelings for you.
Those feelings grew when we went to the Café near my house. I remember your warm smile and your confused looks when you looked at the menu, expecting to see coke. I laughed before I explained it was a coffee café, one that only sold coffee. You were so cute that day, that when I feel asleep that night, I was utterly happy.
We met again, once more before I was sure I had fallen in love with you. This time we went to the park to play soccer. I was hopeless at it whilst you were amazing which wasn’t all that surprising since the first time I saw you, you had a soccer ball with you.
You sped across the field; laughing at me at me trying so hard to catch up with you, to surpass your score. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it immensely even though I had lost 16 goals to none. I remember falling down on the soft mud and spoiling my clothing. I remember your hand outstretched towards me, your eyes filled with concern. You had laughed your squeaky laugh when I took it but tripped again. I love your laugh. You sound just like a dolphin.
I didn’t see you for the next 4 months. I was going through a rough time and couldn’t bear human companionship. I called no-one for the 4 months and kept to myself, ordering groceries online and drinking non-stop. On the beginning of the 5th month however, you found me amongst the clattered bottles; and nursed me back to health. You were my guardian angel. You helped me piece back my life; found me another job and gave me a shoulder to lean on. Without you, I would’ve died or suffered the heartbreaking life without you, your smile and your dolphin laugh.
After my recovery; we spent most of our time together. Remember our trip to Australia? You had chosen this country because you said I needed the sunshine after my gloomy confinement. Do you remember our flight over? You and I pretended to be couple to freak the flight attendant out? I was so happy when you hugged me and pulled me in towards you. At that moment, I had wished it was the truth and not a ploy.
Do you remember the sun shining upon us as we ran along the shores of the beach together? Do you remember laughing with me? Do you remember making that holiday so enjoyable, just because you were there with me? Do you remember me, confessing to you in the night? I remember very clearly. We had decided to go for a midnight stroll on the beach to enjoy the beautiful moon. I had stopped you when I saw you shining in the moonlight. You had your cute confused look on, when I reached for the bag I had been careful to hide from you. From it, I had pulled a bouquet of 12 long stemmed, thorn-less red roses I had purchased at the florists when you were shopping. I then got on one knee, as if I was proposing and confessed my love to you. Do you remember how you had jumped for joy and hugged me? Do you remember my smile that night as we fell asleep under the stars, in each other’s arms?
I hope you remember because all my memories with you; are so dear to me. I would always keep them even when I’m 90 and I forget most things; I would remember every one of our memories; I promise you.
~+Present day+~
“Su…” I swung on the swing, pushing onto the dirt.
“Yes Hyukkie?” he glanced over at me.
“Why did you find me? Like two years before...”
“ I guess because I missed you and somehow, I felt propelled to do. Would you rather have I not?”
“Of course not. I love you very much and I would hate to have a future without you.”
“That’s good to know…” He murmured, looking down at his feet.
“Su-ah, what’s wrong?” I took his hand; I sensed something was wrong.
“Wrong? There’s nothing wrong.” He turned his face away from mine and carefully and slowly took his hand from mine.
“Hmm…don’t lie to me Su. I know something’s wrong. Why else would you take your hand away? Did you meet someone else?” I was worried.
“No. Just…Well, you said a future…I can’t see it. We aren’t married or anything…”
“Is that what you want?”
“No…I mean yes, but…”
“But what?”
“Well…I don’t know.”
I sighed. I shifted his gaze from Junsu’s head and looked at the sky, deep in thought.
After a while, when I hadn’t heard anything from him, I looked at him and was surprised to see him, staring at me with such love, I almost melted. “Yes dear?”
“Oh…nothing…” he turned away from me yet again.
Now is the time.
I got off from my swing.
I stepped in front of him.
He looked at me, confused.
I kneeled, and from my pocket, I produced a box.
I held it up and looked at him.
“Kim Junsu, will you marry me?” I opened it to reveal a silver ring, with a single diamond nestled in the center of the band.
His mouth was hanging wide open now, his eyes in shock.
I laughed quietly.
Slowly, he nodded.
I took the ring out and slipped it onto his finger.
I stood up and embraced him, glad we were going to be joined for eternity. That’s what I would like. An eternity with him.
~+One Year Later+~
“You may now say your vows.” The minister looked over at the man on his right; the man dressed in a black suit with a red rose sticking out of his pocket.
This man glanced over at his ‘bride’, all dressed in white and began.
“Kim Junsu, from the very first moment I saw you, I knew you were something special. You were kicking your soccer ball in front of you, umbrella-less in the rain. The moment you said my name, I knew that I no longer preferred women, but men. Your laugh enchanted me. Your smiles drew me closer into your spell. By our second date; I had fallen head-over-heels in love with you. You were that special someone I had waited my whole life to meet, the one I would now choose to spend the rest of my days with. You were my angel, my light in the darkest of times. You shared your shoulder with me. You were my nurse; my muse. I owe everything that I am, everything that I have; I owe it all to you. I promise you my heart, my body-*this earnt him sniggers from the audience*- my fidelity, my mind. I promise it all to you. I love you.”
The minister looked at him approvingly and nodded to the ‘woman’ on his left to start.
“ Lee HyukJae. You’re the only one who could make me smile as much as I have over the past. You could make me feel with just one look. Love, warmth and many others I cannot describe properly today. You are my everything. If I was able to do it all over again; I would keep you the same, I would still want to be standing with you here today. I promise to love and be with you forever.”
The minister looked at the veiled woman suspiciously. “Do you Lee Hyukjae, take Kim Junsu to be your lawfully wedded wife? In sickness and in health, in the sad times and the happy, in richness and in poverty, till death do you part?”
The man on the minister’s right nodded and smiled. “I do.”
“Do you Kim Junsu take Lee Hyukjae to be your lawfully wedded husband? In sickness and in health, in the sad times and the happy, in richness and in poverty, till death do you part?”
The woman paused before answering “I do.”
“You now may kiss the bride.” The minister smiled.
Suddenly, the bride bent over and covered her mouth. The man in black looked her alarmed. “Is there something wrong baby?”
“I forgot to tell you….I’m pregnant” With those words, she rushed off to the nearest bathroom.
~+Two years later+~
“Appa..wheres Umma?” The little girl asked, pulling on her father’s trousers.
He smiled and pulled her up into a bear hug. “Stop Appa!” she giggled. “you can only hug Umma!”
He laughed. “Really now…so where is he?”
‘I don’t know, that’s why I asked you!” the little girl pouted.
A laugh that sounded like bells came from the bathroom, followed by a “Papa loves you, don’t you know?” in a voice that was squeaky like a dolphin.
“There we go!” He laughed as he carried her to the other room.
She giggled and hugged his neck. “Umma!!” She shouted as soon as she saw her mother, bent over and playing with the little baby.
“Hey, how many times do I have to tell you to call me Appa?” Junsu frowned, putting his hands on his hips.
“But there has to be one umma and one appa!” She pouted.
“SO why can’t I be the Appa and Hyukkie be the umma?”
“Because Appa is manly and Umma’s not.” The little girl giggled.
“ See, that’s why I’m the appa dear. Our little Su Jae is right.” He beamed.
“Are you calling me girly?” Junsu pouted which made the little baby giggle again.
“yes Umma!” Su Jae clapped her hands. ‘you are so smart!”
Hyukjae laughed and went to pull the little baby in a hug as well, and to run away from scary umma Junsu because he had a scary look on his face!
“Come on Su Jae and Jun Hyuk! We have to run away from pretty umma before he catches us!”
Junsu groaned as he began to chase Eunhyuk around the bedroom, before finally catching him and pushing him onto the bed. He took Su Jae and Jun Hyuk from Eunhyuk and plopped them onto the cot. Then he sat on Eunhyuk who groaned. “If you don’t call me Appa, I will squash your precious father!” He threatened Su jae.
“No! Umma has to be girly like you!” She giggled with Jun Hyuk.
Junsu answered this by pushing down harder. “OWW!” Eunhuk screamed.
“Okay, okay! Appa Junsu!” Su Jae gave in.
Junsu got off and stood there with a victorious grin. Eunhyuk got off and rubbed his back. Su Jae rushed over to him and started to hug him. “Look what you did umma! Appa’s hurt!”
Junsu frowned. Eunhyuk weakly laughed as he said “She’s right to call you umma, after all normal appas don’t give birth!”
Junsu let out a frustrated groan in surrender as the two laughed.
