Making Icons

Mar 02, 2009 22:59

I love making icons.  I love taking requests.  and yes, that is a mallet over the head if anyone wants to make a request :)

However, it's not always practical.  And it occurred to me that not everyone knows how to make them.  So here is a very quick set of basic instructions.  You'll need two freeware programs to get started.  These are NOT the only one's out there, but they are the most user friendly that I've found.

IrfanView and PAINT.net

Download those and you can get started :)

1) open the image you want to make an icon of in your Irfan program, then use your cursor to select what you want to use as your icon and COPY it.  Don't worry if it's larger then 100 x 100.  I'll show you how to resize it later.  But it is best if you keep the HeightxWidth the same.

2) Open PAINT.net and select NEW (I know it opens a new one when it starts, but ignore that and select NEW under FILE).  This will open a dialogue box that should have the dimensions of your selection.  Hit OK.

3) PASTE your selection in the PAINT.net file.

4) To resize use CTRL R and put in 100 x 100.  Hit OK.

5) SAVE it as a GIF or JPEG and your good to go :)

That's the bare bones method of making icons.  PAINT.net is a very nice little program that will be easy to play with, so have fun with your creations!
